The Multifaceted Asian Consumer Market

Uniqlo Store SoHo Mannequins1 Cropped“Overall Asia is a market in flux, with radical changes and an influx of tech and global brands. It creates a society where consumers are being pulled in different directions”, said Bernd Schmitt. Not only are there distinctions between developed and emerging Asian countries, but he noted it’s also important not to generalize or stereotype Asian consumer and cultural trends.

Schmitt’s perspective is based on extensive experience living, working and traveling throughout Asia. He’s a visiting professor at Singapore’s Institute on Asian Consumer Insight (ACI) and professor at New York’s Columbia Business School. He recently spoke at an event in New York about his latest book, The Changing Face of the Asian Consumer. Joining him were panelists Colin Mitchell, Ogilvy & Mather’s worldwide head of planning, and Brian Buchwald, CEO/co-founder of Bomoda, a marketplace for Chinese consumers to purchase premium global brands.

The main takeaways focus on the interplay of economic, cultural, brand and market factors.

Tennis Star Djokovic is the New Face of Uniqlo. What?

Tennis star and gluten-free foodie Novak Djokovic — at left, giving us some fist-pumping Zoolander action — is not exactly known for being a fashion plate. Though who needs clothes when you look like this or this.

So yeah. In an effort to expand its appeal to Europeans and Americans, Uniqlo has signed him to a five-year contract in which he’s wearing and designing clothes instead of standing mostly naked by a pool. You can check out the collection here (tennis whites, of course). Or you can scroll back up for the pictures of him in tiny swim trunks.

Advice for Fashion Brands: Branch Out to Reel Them In

Digital experts speaking with WWD say that fashion brands need to take their efforts beyond those who already visit their websites regularly. Now, they should focus on getting their content placed elsewhere on the Web in order to attract new customers and drive traffic to their branded sites.

“The whole purpose of branded content is to engage the consumer where they live, which is on Facebook, blogs and more, and to put that content primarily on the branded Web site is speaking to the already converted,” said Quynh Mai, founder of Moving Image & Content, a digital agency that works with Yves Saint Laurent, Shiseido, and other brands.

Lots of brands are already taking that advice.
