This role will specifically serve NDR and its reporting units, as well as the University on the whole, by promoting the many research, scholarship, and creative endeavor outputs from ND’s researchers on websites and social media, ensuring the University is best in class and forward-looking with its digital communications, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the University’s research reputation to target audiences, such as faculty and senior administrators as peer universities, prospective postdoctoral scholars, and graduate and undergraduate students, funding agencies and donors, and more.
As a skilled and accurate communicator, the Web and Social Media Manager (WSMM) will work to ensure that NDR’s communications platforms have dynamic, up-to-date, and consistently developing content that is well-presented, technically accurate, meets target higher education audience needs, and serves the strategies and tactics of NDR’s communications vision and mission. In concert with the ND Creative Web Team, the WSMM will develop all websites under the NDR umbrella, including centers, institutes, core facilities, lab, and faculty director sites, as well as the main website, research.nd.edu. To do so, the WSMM will work with the relevant organization to identify need and then will create the IA and coordinate its review and approval; review all designs and wireframes; coordinate and/or write and edit all copy for the site; identify photography, including working with NDR’s in-house photographer and/or ND Creative to complete same; and ensure the site is reviewed and approved by the Director of Research Communications and the NDR client in a timely manner in advance of launch.
The WSMM will manage the main NDR website on a daily basis, including importing news stories, media mentions, and events, ensuring staff pages are updated, and more. He/she/they will coordinate with Writer and Editorial Manager on the NDR editorial calendar to ensure opportunities are capitalized on. The WSMM will be expected to upkeep some NDR unit sites as well. Finally, the WSMM will report on web analytics on a monthly basis and make recommendations for strategic changes, as needed, upon interpretation of the data.
Relatedly, the WSSM will ensure the NDR module in the ND mobile app (download ND mobile on the App Store; hosted by Modo Labs) is maintained and updated on a regular basis.
In addition, the WSMM will advise on and manage social media channels under the NDR umbrella. Daily, the WSMM will populate the main X handle, @UNDResearch , with timely and relevant content that advances the University’s research reputation with peer audiences. To do so, the WSMM will remain informed of research, scholarship, and creative endeavor from across the campus and will coordinate NDR’s in-house graphic designer and photographer/videographer to create eye-catching social cards and other graphics. The WSMM will also manage both the public and internal NDR LinkedIn pages, ensuring they are populated with engaging content on a regular (at least 2-3 times a week) basis.
The WSMM will support and advise NDR units on their own social media channels, which include Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, and X. This social media-savvy person will be able to provide strategic guidance on where each unit should be on social media, if anywhere at all. In some cases, the WSMM will manage some NDR unit channels as well. Finally, the WSMM will regularly review, evaluate, and report on related social media data in order to help inform decision-making on future strategies and tactics.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with ND’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications, including ND Creative, Brand Content, and others, as well as counterpoints in the Colleges and Schools and OIT.
Finally, this collaborative, solutions-oriented problem solver, who has an understanding of, and enthusiasm for, higher education and research, and can work within embargoed and/or confidential arrangements, will work diplomatically as part of the NDRC team to support all existing NDR communications services in order to help to provide central communications and marketing service to all units within Notre Dame Research.
