Computational Journalist, Data Reporting Join to apply for the Computational Journalist, Data Reporting role at The Washington Post Job Description The Washington Post is seeking a collaborative, creative journalist and technologist who can help build data pipelines, unlock new data sources, and use quantitative analysis to cover topics ranging from education to criminal justice. This is a data reporting role that will also be tasked with helping implement devops best practices for the data reporting team. The Post’s data reporting team consists of journalists working across the newsroom to unearth impactful stories from data. The reporter will be embedded with the National desk, collaborating closely with national correspondents on various topics, and will also work across disciplines on large datasets and special projects. Ideal candidates will be driven to produce revelatory work, whether through tools for the newsroom or data analysis delivering critical insights. They should be curious, lifelong learners, skeptical, and team-oriented, thriving through sharing knowledge and collaboration. Responsibilities Identify compelling stories powered by data, pitch new ideas, and enhance others’ ideas with novel analysis and data-gathering approaches. Handle large, complex datasets and create workflows for cloud computing, big data storage, and ETL processes. Help establish devops best practices for data infrastructure, evaluating providers and training colleagues. Collaborate with journalists focused on text, graphics, and storytelling formats. Acquire data, conduct statistical analysis, and pursue traditional reporting methods. Work on both breaking news and long-term projects. Qualifications Minimum 3 years’ professional journalism experience. Expertise in analysis languages such as R or Python. Experience with machine learning and AI is a plus. Experience deploying software on cloud providers like AWS or Heroku, using Docker, Linux, Google BigQuery, or similar tools is highly desirable. Strong team spirit, keen data instincts, and a drive to produce compelling stories. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
