The Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting wage, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $18.73 and $24.70. Position Summary
The Library Assistant III performs tasks related to the circulation of library materials, including greeting and directing customers, checking materials in and out, registering customers for library cards, providing orientation services, explaining policies, maintaining customer accounts, and operating outreach vehicles. May plan and present programming and reader advisory services. Meets minimum public service hours as defined by Library Administration.
Essential Duties
- Drive outreach vehicle to community sites.
- Greet and direct customers.
- Check materials in and out.
- Register customers for library cards.
- Provide orientation and explain policies.
- Maintain customer accounts.
- Assist patrons with locating materials and using computers.
- Answer reference questions and provide readers advisory.
- Support clerical duties and work at the circulation desk.
- Set up and monitor book displays.
- Promote and assist with programs and services.
- Plan and present programming and readers advisory services, if applicable.

Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.; Associate's degree preferred.
- At least two years of related experience or equivalent training/education.
- Ability to work day, evening, and weekend hours.
- Valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points.
- Favorable criminal background check.

- Knowledge of library practices, policies, and procedures.
- Friendly environment creation and customer retention skills.
- Ability to operate computer systems and office machines.
- Organizational skills for maintaining materials.
- Ability to handle monies and maintain records.
- Flexibility, patience, and strong customer service skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic math skills.
Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Library Associate III Outreach or Branch Manager. It does not supervise staff.
Work Environment
- Occasional physical effort handling light materials.
- Moderate noise environment.
- Standing or walking up to 60% of the time.
- Sitting and computer use for extended periods.
- Safe workplace practices required.
- Travel to branch/outside locations required.
Work Week
Includes day, evening, and weekend hours.
