Director of the Law Library and Adjunct Professor of Law
Founded in 1896, the Gould School of Law has a distinguished history built on principles of equity and excellence, pioneering legal education in Southern California. The school was among the first to engage students in clinical programs and remains a leader in experiential education.
The University of Southern California Gould School of Law is seeking applicants for the position of Director of the Law Library. The library director oversees all aspects of library operations and services, including external relations, budget management, personnel management, strategic planning, and legal research curriculum development and teaching. The successful candidate will report to the Vice Dean for Administration and will oversee a team of 7 faculty librarians and 4 staff members.
The Asa V. Call Law Library primarily supports the teaching and research activities of the law school community, which includes approximately 620 J.D. students, 639 non-J.D. graduate students, 189 undergraduate Legal Studies majors, 55 full-time faculty members, and 120 support staff. The library is committed to providing high-quality service to the law faculty and students and serves the broader USC community.
Qualifications
- A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- An M.L.S. (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program.
- At least seven to ten years of management experience in an academic law library.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
Librarian Appointment Rank
Law librarians at USC hold faculty status and are appointed on a continuing track with rank based on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will also receive a courtesy appointment as an adjunct professor of law.
Administrative Appointment
The law library director role includes an initial 3-year administrative appointment, renewable upon USC approval. All appointments and stipends are subject to university policies.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from $155,000 to $175,000, along with university benefits. Additionally, the law school provides a $30,000 annual administrative stipend during tenure as Director. For detailed benefits, visit this link.
