Overview
Under supervision, performs routine clerical work in support of service to library patrons; and performs other work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Library Assistant is the entry class for the Library Services series.
Library Assistant is distinguished from the Library Technician in that the latter is the full working level class and may be given full charge of daily operations in a Branch library or provide library patron services in the main library.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those which are leastlikely to be essential functions for any single position in this class.
- Assists library patrons in locating materials and using library equipment.
- Checks library materials in and out; collects fines and fees; issues library cards.
- Shelves books and other materials; straightens tables, work areas, and collections.
- Processes overdue notices and records; enters information into computer and other record systems.
- Promotes and participates in various library programs.
- Types and files memos, reports, forms, and correspondence.
Knowledge of basic library procedures and record keeping.
Ability to file numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instruction; use library resources and equipment; type at a rate sufficient to perform the duties of the position; maintain library record keeping systems; work with a variety of people both in person and on the telephone.
Experience and Training: Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate plus some experience working with record systems and with a variety of people.
