Overview
The Research Data Management Librarian will oversee the development and delivery of research data management and data curation services, including understanding discipline-specific patron needs, updating content on the departmental website, working within Scholarship@Miami, the UM institutional repository, and research information hub. The role supports broader unit goals of enhancing student outcomes and lowering barriers to entry in the research lifecycle. Additionally, the librarian will participate in promoting data literacy across the campus community.
This is a collaborative position that requires working closely with members of the Research Data & Open Scholarship unit, as well as library and campus partners such as the Richter Library Learning & Research Services, the STEM & Interdisciplinary Research Librarian, the Data Scientist, the Institute for Data Science & Computing (IDSC), the Graduate School, and Learning Commons affiliates.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Estimated percentages for responsibilities: 40% teaching and consultations, 30% data management and curation efforts (including maintenance of data curation and RDM-related web content), 10% training, 10% research and professional development, 10% service.
Performance
- Collaborate with Research Data & Open Scholarship faculty and staff to provide instructional and consultative services for students, faculty, and staff in research data management, data curation, access, and data-related software and methodologies;
- Offer office hours in the Digital Scholars’ Lab to assist students, answer patron questions, and refer inquiries to relevant faculty or staff;
- Work with the Data Scientist and other colleagues to provide data curation and management services across disciplines;
- Coordinate with the GIS Librarian for Instruction & Engagement on GIS data discovery and research;
- Create and maintain workshop content, descriptions, events, and training resources on the Research Data & Open Scholarship library website;
- Assist with efforts to showcase student and faculty work in collaboration with library partners such as the Creative Studio;
- Track, analyze, and interpret assessment data to improve services, consultations, events, and workshops;
- Stay informed on trends in research data management, data visualization, and analysis, and communicate their implications effectively;
- Support interdepartmental activities and strategic relationships to promote research data management and open scholarship;
- Participate in developing research data management services and faculty research initiatives;
- Model the University’s “DIRECCT” values: diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork.
Service
- Network and collaborate with local, regional, national, and international organizations focused on research data management, curation, GIS services, digital storytelling, and data visualization;
- Represent the University of Miami Libraries in various organizations and forums;
- Serve on university committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate;
- Lead or participate in library-level committees, task forces, and special projects.
