Job Description
Job Summary:
The Archivist will collect, organize, manage, care for, and digitize historically valuable collections stored in the AT&T Library and the Wolf Jazz Institute at Harris-Stowe State University. The archivist will be responsible for finding aids using 21st Century standards to digitize and encode metadata to make materials available online.
Principal Duties
- Organize archival records and develop system to enable access to the archival materials
- Create and maintain accessible retrieval computer archives and databases, incorporating 21st Century information storage technology
- Provide direct safekeeping of permanent records.
- Preserve all documents and objects, copying records to computer formats as necessary
- Direct activities of workers who assist in arranging collections of valuable materials
- Complies with library policies and procedures
- Preserves the original materials
Education and Experience Requirements:
- ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) with an emphasis in Archival Studies
- Specialize in an area of history or technology, researching topics relevant to collection, and determine what should be retained or acquired
- Customer service experience
- Office environment experience
- Proficiency in using various technologies
- Library experience preferred, but not required

- Ability to write clear and concise descriptions of library materials
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
- Ability to work either individually or in a team
- Ability to focus on tasks

- Ability to listen to patrons to help them with research topics or with finding materials
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to multitask
- Able to effectively work with a diverse team of coworkers
- Must have an interest and knowledge of historical information
- The ability to use archive management software to index materials
Requirements:
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
- Ability to push heavy carts and lift boxes
- Manual dexterity to use a computer keyboard
- Ability to see and read small print on labels
