Job Overview
Responsible for writing newscasts and production of the broadcast.
Job Responsibilities
- Construct and plan a daily newscast by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscast, using criteria established by management.
- Decide on stories to include, their duration, form (voice over, live remote, reporter package, etc.), and their order.
- Write and rewrite stories as needed, plan for contingencies, and ensure all aspects of the newscast are complete before airing.
- Plan ahead, meet deadlines, and coordinate scripts, graphics, video lists, and key information.
- Enter story information into the newsroom computer system and notify staff of changes or special situations.
- Write and post stories to the website and social media platforms, and update online content frequently.
- Shoot and edit video for broadcast as needed.
- Collaborate with newsroom staff including reporters, anchors, photographers, and others.
- Communicate throughout the shift, respond to crises, and handle last-minute changes effectively.
- Ensure visuals are relevant and impactful, and simplify complex stories.
- Manage live newscast timing, communicate with technical staff, and monitor the broadcast from the control room.
- Complete post-show tasks, attend meetings, contribute story ideas, and stay informed on current events.
- May travel occasionally and work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
