Library Director (full-time, salary commensurate with responsibilities)
Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, manages and directs the operations of the library; performs related work as required.
Education:
A Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited library program or from a New Jersey college Master's program in Library Science deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State College.
Experience:
Five (5) years of library experience, including work in service, circulation, and reference areas, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
Salary Range:
$105,000 - $115,000
License:
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Professional Librarian license issued by Thomas Edison State College.
Notes:
- N.J.S.A. 45:8A-3 and N.J.A.C 15:23-2.1(a) specify that any library supported in whole or in part by public funds, or serving a municipality with a population of 10,000 or more, shall require that professional librarians hold a valid professional librarian certificate.
- For libraries serving municipalities with a population of 7,500 or more, N.J.A.C. 15:23-2.1(b) states that librarians must hold a New Jersey Professional Librarian's Certificate, regardless of N.J.S.A. 45:8A-3.
Appointees will need a valid New Jersey driver's license only if operating a vehicle is necessary for job duties.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of library and information science.
- Knowledge of library administration, management, current technology, trends, and innovations.
- Ability to manage and administer a library program.
- Ability to analyze, understand, and utilize public library standards, methods, techniques, budgeting systems, and classification and pay plans.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, administrators, board members, and the public.
- Ability to plan and conduct surveys and studies of library services.
- Ability to assist in book selection, classification, cataloguing, and technical administrative problems.
- Ability to speak before groups clearly and informatively.
- Ability to coordinate library services for maximum efficiency.
- Ability to serve as a consultant and advisor on library problems and services.
- Ability to prepare accurate reports and maintain records.
- Ability to learn and utilize electronic and manual information systems.
- Proficiency in English; American Sign Language or Braille may also be acceptable.
