Please Note: Position generally works up to 24 hours per week and includes evening and weekend shifts.
JOB SUMMARY
This position provides support for library youth services functions.
MAJOR DUTIES
Provides assistance to patrons in the youth services section; answers reference questions in person and by telephone.
Assists patrons in the use of computers.
Creates and updates book displays, books lists, and flyers.
Assists with collection management, including weeding, ordering materials, and reviewing periodicals to identify new materials.
Plans and coordinates youth programs.
Checks library materials in and out; collects patron fines; assists patrons in locating library materials.
Issues and renews library cards to patrons.
Attends conferences and training sessions to further professional development and to follow trends.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of public library policies, procedures, programs, and services.
Knowledge of patron services principles.
Knowledge of library computers and software systems.
Skill in the use of computer automated library catalog and circulation systems.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the operation of computers and general office machines.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Youth Services Librarian assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related patron service duties. The unique needs of each client contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to provide support for library youth services functions. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of library services to the general public.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other libraries, and patrons.
Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
The work is typically performed in library.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Baccalaureate degree in a related field required.
More than three years of related experience required.
Previous work with children recommended.
Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Must successfully pass a credit check.
