GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is a semi-skilled administrative role responsible for providing clerical assistance and service support within a public library system.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Sort and shelve books and materials according to classification standards.
- Issue and receive library materials, including books, films, and audio-visual devices.
- Record data and due dates using automated systems to ensure accurate issuance and return.
- Operate various computer systems related to library functions.
- Inspect returned items for damage.
- Verify due dates, compute, and record overdue fines.
- Handle payment transactions.
- Respond positively to change and perform additional tasks as assigned.
- Maintain a professional and safe work environment following safety policies.
- Process new library materials as per technical service guidelines.
- Perform basic repairs on damaged materials.
- Assist other Highlands public library branches as needed.
- Support library and community outreach programs.
- Work a flexible schedule.
- Adhere to Board policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Understanding of public library principles and procedures.
- Knowledge of work methods related to public service.
- Ability to locate research materials efficiently.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work harmoniously with staff and the public.
- Basic computer skills relevant to library work.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to enforce library rules for safety.
- Capacity to work independently when needed.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Valid Florida Driver License and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
PHYSICAL SKILLS
Must be able to remain stationary for 25% of the time, handle materials weighing up to 25 lbs, and communicate effectively with the public and staff. Occasional outdoor work and vehicle operation are required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience in a library or customer service role.
- Basic computer keyboarding skills.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License.
- This position is disaster essential.
