Administrative Assistant,Hampton History Museum
Hampton’s unique setting at the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the James River has positioned it at the forefront of fundamental milestones in our nation’s history. The best stories tell sweeping narratives through the personal accounts of individuals and communities involved in events. The history of Hampton, a small southern city, has the ability to illuminate the arc of American history, at once personal and complex, and fundamental in America’s early settlement, education, slavery, war, and modern technology and innovation. Through onsite and virtual means, we reach well over a million people every year.
The Hampton History Museum is a City of Hampton facility and a part of its Historic Assets Division of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services. The Hampton History Museum Association, a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit, is hiring an experienced grants writer to secure funds to underwrite Museum programming. This position would not be a city employee.
The Hampton History Museum Association is seeking an experienced grants writer on a part-time, contract basis, to help us secure approximately $75-100K in FY26 through strategic grant applications and funding proposals. This role is ideal for a skilled writer with a strong track record in nonprofit fundraising, particularly in securing grants from foundations, corporate donors and government agencies.
We expect the grant writer to work around 10 hours per week and the hourly rate for this position is $30-40/hour, commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
·Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with the History Museum’s mission, strategic plan, and programs.
·Develop compelling grant proposals, LOIs (Letters of Inquiry), and funding applications that effectively communicate our work and impact.
·Manage a grant calendar to ensure timely submission of applications, renewals, and reports.
·Collaborate with staff of the Hampton History Museum to gather necessary information, budgets, and impact metrics for proposals.
·Track and report on grant application statuses, including follow-ups, funding decisions, and compliance requirements.
·Maintain relationships with foundations and institutional funders, including stewardship and ongoing engagement.
·Assist in developing strategic funding sources and increase overall grants revenue.
Experience Required
·Strong research skills to identify potential funders and align funding opportunities with organizational needs.
·Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling abilities, with the ability to translate data into compelling narratives.
·Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple applications simultaneously.
·Knowledge of history, community building and engagement, or related fields is a plus
Experience Preferred
·Minimum of 3 years of experience in grant writing and fundraising for nonprofits
·Experience managing grant reporting, compliance, and funder relationships
·Proven track record securing at least $75-100k annually in grant funding
