K-8th Grade Music/Choir Teacher Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School, Bremerton, WA Part-time Position Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Catholic Liberal Arts elementary school located in Bremerton, WA. Currently, OLSOS serves 235 students in Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. We are delighted to have a school staff who embrace the mission of Catholic Liberal Arts Education and to have the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia of Nashville as a part of our community. The pillars of our school philosophy and curriculum are Christ-Centeredness, Faith & Reason, Virtue, Discernment, Beauty, Relationships & Family, and Catholic Social Teaching. With Beauty as one of the pillars of our school philosophy, we seek to lead our students to an understanding and practice of beauty through the study of music, particularly choral music. We truly believe what the Second Vatican Council said: “Choirs must be diligently promoted…Great importance is to be attached to the teaching and practice of music in…Catholic institutions and schools.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 114, 115) With these values in mind, we seek out a teacher to form our students into competent, literate choir members, able to participate in the joy of singing, both in a liturgical context and in the wider community. Job Responsibilities – Teach music class to each grade twice per week, applying Kodaly and/or Ward method techniques and emphasizing good choral singing technique – Create weekly lesson plans to be submitted to administration for review – Prepare weekly a 5-8th Grade choir to sing at school Mass and direct the choir at Mass – Collaboratively organize an Advent Concert and Spring Concert – Organize performances for the Saints and Scholars Gala (school annual fundraiser) – Establish clear expectations, procedures, and routines for virtuous student behavior within the classroom and reinforce schoolwide behavior expectations – Evaluate student performance and provide a summative grade for each trimester report card – Use effective and concise verbal and written communication skills with students, parents, and other staff – Attend all school wide professional development within the year – Attend school staff meetings twice a month – Desire to work as part of an instructional team that desires to foster a love of learning in all Optional Opportunities for Additional Income – Sing as section leader in the adult schola for the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday and special liturgies – Sing at weddings and funerals for the parish – Organize and direct a school musical in spring – Teach piano and/or voice after school
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree- Be a practicing Catholic willing to pledge fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church- Experience singing in a college-level choir- Excellent understanding of music and vocal technique, shown through a voice audition- Kodaly or Ward method certification or willing to earn certification- Clear a background check and complete safe environment trainingPreferred Qualifications- Music education degree- Keyboard proficiency- Two years of experience teaching- Eight years of experience singing in choir- Hold a teaching certificate in WA state/other state or currently working towards one
