The SEED School of Maryland combines a rigorous and engaging academic curriculum with life skills and enrichment activities to provide students with a thoughtfully balanced learning and living experience. Students and their families commit to a seven-year educational program that offers small class sizes, high quality teaching and learning experiences, mentoring, community service, and extracurricular activities such as sports and arts. SUMMARY
Under the leadership of The Director of Academics, the Librarian provides students and teachers intellectual and physical access to materials in appropriate formats (books, periodicals, videos, DVDs, filmstrips, computer software, etc.); provides instructions to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas; and works with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of students. The Librarian serves as teacher, materials expert, and
curriculum adviser to ensure that the library/media center is involved in instructional programs for the school.
Roles and Responsibilities
The school library media specialist (SLMS) creates an environment where collaboration and creative problem solving thrive. The SLMS instills enthusiasm in others by including them as part of a team. Foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and openness to new ideas, welcoming and encouraging input from others to create consensus. They anticipate future obstacles and continually retool to meet
Benchmarking the SLMP to school, state, and national program standards;
Sharing expertise by presenting at faculty meetings, parent meetings, and school board meetings;
Creating an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, and collaboration with teaching staff;
Sharing with the learning community collaboratively developed and up-to-date district policies
concerning such issues as materials selection, circulation, reconsideration of materials, copyright, privacy, and acceptable use;
Encouraging the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning, providing 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community;
Collecting and analyzing data to improve instruction and to demonstrate correlations between the SLMP and student achievement;
Remaining current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to library media programs;
Advocating for library media programs and the guiding principles of the library media profession; the SLMS is an active, accessible, and informed proponent of the library media profession.
Teacher/Instructional Partner
The school library media specialist (SLMS) empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. The SLMS supports students’ success by guiding them. And also works with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources. The SLMS demonstrates his or her role as an essential and equal partner in the instructional process by:
Participating in the curriculum development process at all levels to ensure that the curricula include the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy) necessary to meet content standards and to develop lifelong learners
Collaborating with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking;
Participating in the implementation of collaboratively planned learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and evaluating activities;
Joining with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
Program Administrator
As program administrator, the school library media specialist (SLMS) works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the policies of the library media program and to guide and direct all activities related to it. The SLMS maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of the school library media program by providing a reliable programming system.
T he school library media specialist (SLMS) maintains current and in-depth knowledge of the research and best practices in all aspects of information literacy, technology in the classroom and 21st century technology skills for the students and families.
Required:
A Master’s degree in Library Science or a related field
Hold an MSDE or reciprocal state certification as a school librarian and have completed a teacher preparation program and/or educational degree.
Minimum of three years' experience working as a School Librarian with an urban population;
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated technology proficiency – Other software packages
Demonstrated ability to interact with students, parents, and administrators
Knowledge of all applicable federal, state and local laws, guidelines and procedures
Skill in working in collaboration team-based environments
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift and/or move boxes up to 25 lbs. in weight. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to a noise level in the work
environment that is usually moderate. The work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as classrooms, dorms, offices, meeting and training
