Genelec Drives DJ/Producer Hardwell’s Studio Overhaul In The Netherlands The facility in Breda replaced its original 1034 loudspeakers with next-generation 1234A Smart Active Monitors, including 1234A main monitors, pairs of 8341A and 8020D nearfields, and a 7073A subwoofer. Recently, award-winning Dutch DJ/producer Hardwell upgraded his private studio in Breda, Netherlands, replacing the original Genelec 1034s with the newer 1234A Smart Active Monitors. “We started at his parents’ house studio over 13 years ago, and since then, Hardwell has continually refined and upgraded his spaces,” says his long-time collaborator, studio designer Jan Morel. “Each studio surpasses the last — his ideas are always evolving.” Central to this upgrade are Genelec monitors, which Hardwell has consistently used. “When we first built a studio together, Jan introduced me to Genelec speakers,” he recalls. “Before that, I used different brands, but hearing the 1034s for the first time was a revelation. I’ve been hooked ever since.” Two white 1234A main monitors form part of a stereo monitoring system, complemented by pairs of 8341A and 8020D nearfield models, and a 7073A subwoofer. As part of the Smart Active Monitoring family, the 1234A and 8341A models integrate with GLM calibration software, giving Hardwell enhanced control and clarity in his productions. Hardwell explains, “The speakers calibrate to the room, making the entire space feel like a sweet spot. I don’t experience phase cancellation when moving around, and everything sounds smooth. Typically, you’d notice more low-end at the back of a room, but these speakers balance everything out.” With Morel’s meticulous attention to detail, each aspect of the studio was designed to meet Hardwell’s needs, often evolving through spontaneous ideas and adjustments. Morel concludes, “Working with Hardwell is an ongoing conversation.
