Job Summary IEEE Spectrum has an exciting opportunity for a full-time editor to cover the tech policy beat. Published by the IEEE, Spectrum is an editorially independent, general-interest publication on technology comprising a monthly print magazine (circulation 500,000) and a website (1 million monthly visitors, spectrum.ieee.org). A successful candidate will have a passion for cutting-edge science and technology and a deep appreciation for how they intersect with government, society, and business. You'll be joining an award-winning team of experienced, collaborative, and dedicated journalists. Responsibilities include: Reporting and writing news stories on tech policy. Soliciting opinion pieces and feature articles from tech policy experts. Collaborating with the art team to make articles visually engaging. Working with the copydesk to ensure accuracy and adherence to house style. Traveling domestically and internationally for reporting. In this role, you'll cover Spectrum's focus areas such as technology and research policy, regulation, engineering community issues, industry trends, education, funding, and international cooperation on topics like climate change, internet access, energy transition, and nuclear proliferation. You'll have room to explore and follow leads, and you'll be expected to communicate complex topics clearly and engagingly to a broad audience. Location:
The ideal candidate will be based on the U.S. West Coast, but other U.S. locations will be considered. Key duties: Research, report, and write news and feature articles. Solicit and edit opinion pieces from experts. Monitor developments in tech policy and regulation, cultivate sources, and attend relevant events. Coordinate with the art department for visual content. Promote Spectrum content via search and social media. Analyze audience engagement data to refine coverage. Contribute to discussions on special issues and develop article ideas. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, astronomy, history, economics, journalism, or English literature. At least 7 years of journalism experience. Excellent reporting, writing, and editing skills. Fearless in sourcing and interviewing. Professional and patient with expert contributors. Collaborative team player. Active social media presence. Fluency in Spanish or other languages is a plus. Interest in public panels and media events; proficiency with content management tools. Other Requirements: Currently serving on an IEEE board or committee disqualifies applicants. Position does not support employer-sponsored immigration support.
