ABOUT THE ROLE

Inc. Business Media is looking for a deputy editor that will assist the editor-in-chief in setting and executing the overall vision, tone, and ambition of their journalism across all platforms, including websites, magazines, and events. This role will involve directing a dynamic team of senior editors, writers, video, and podcast teams to produce daily coverage, online features, and print content. The deputy editor will also liaise with various divisions including product, design, engineering, and ad sales teams, helping roadmap and communicate strategy and initiatives across the organization.

Salary range: $145,833 - $204,167 + bonus eligible. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Collaborating with the editor-in-chief to set the overall vision for Inc. Business Media, creating groundbreaking editorial initiatives that boost the title’s visibility and ambition
  • Managing and directing a team of senior editors, writers, and reporters
  • Overseeing long-term editorial content planning, including future feature stories, cover stories, and edit packages, relative to the EIC's vision for all platforms
  • Participating in the development of print editorial lineup; giving final approval for all story pitches; overseeing the direction of digital content
  • Serving as the final top editor for all content for major packages
  • Recruiting new writers/reporters and cultivating relationships with potential event speakers
  • Working closely with the creative director to execute an integrated editorial/design strategy for larger stories
  • Setting and holding editors accountable to performance standards
  • Taking part in live appearances at Inc. conferences and acting as a representative of the brand at industry events
  • Developing and communicating strategy and initiatives across the organization
  • Providing the ad sales team with content ideas as needed for RFPs, proposals, etc.
  • Developing, in collaboration with the editor-in-chief, career development and enrichment for editorial staff
  • Setting and driving the cultural tone for Inc. Business Media’s editorial operations, ensuring alignment with Mansueto Ventures's values

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • 15+ years of journalism experience with an emphasis on digital transformation
  • Exceptional skills identifying and packaging imaginative, innovative stories that rise above the noise
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, outstanding news judgment
  • Strong interest in and previous experience in business news, particularly in Inc. Business Media’s editorial pillars, including technology, creativity, design, social impact, work-life (leadership), and news
  • Deeply sourced in business news, with contacts and relationships at the companies and institutions Inc. Business Media regularly covers
  • Talent for writing headlines
  • Proven track record of accuracy, ethics, and fostering a culture that aligns with Mansueto Ventures's values
  • Experience with data-driven decision making and dedication to high-quality journalism
  • Exceptional communication skills and knowledge of cross-media platforms
