Description: Job Summary:The Lead Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for demonstrating leadership skills, for maintaining expert knowledge of Sleep Clinic practices and protocols, and for displaying advanced ability in utilizing specialized and routine laboratory technology. Responsible for keeping scoring up-to-date. Responsible for exhibiting an experienced level of practice during laboratory set-up, patient hook-ups and performing overnight testing. Expected to function as a lead technologist to track, assign and perform, any, and all of the tasks and methods required of each shift. Conducts new staff training and coordinates educational in-services. Functions independently to safety operate and troubleshoot sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep and wake physiology. Routinely maintains and operates standard and specialized laboratory equipment. The Lead Polysomnographic Technologist is expected to maintain a schedule which includes day, evening or night shifts.Essential Responsibilities:Lead polysomnographic technologist: Responsible for demonstrating leadership skills, for maintaining expert knowledge of Sleep Clinic practices and protocols, and for displaying advanced skill in utilizing specialized and routine laboratory technology. Maintains direct reporting relationship to the Director and Manager, through written and oral communication pathways.Demonstrates advanced scoring knowledge and practice.Accountable for achieving mandatory scoring productivity standards for overall shift.Maintains advanced knowledge of Sleep Laboratory policies and procedures.Assists in Coordinating Sleep Clinic laboratory tracking and quality assurance programs.Assists maintaining staff schedule.Assists maintaining staff productivity measurement tools.Demonstrates advanced knowledge of and adherence to policies and proceduresAssists in providing orientation to new employees according to policy and procedures.Provides training in Polysomnographic testing and other Sleep tests and procedures.Verifies staff competencies, utilizing competency standards and checklist.Provides emergency coverage to staff schedule.Oversees maintenance of laboratory equipment and devices.Technical: Follows Sleep Clinic policies and procedures to set-up and prepare laboratory equipment/environment to conduct and perform polysomnographic testing procedures. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of lab protocols and procedures.Demonstrates expert knowledge regarding common Sleep Disorders.Demonstrates expert knowledge of and ability to perform standard testing procedures.Performs laboratory equipment calibrations correctly and in a timely manner and on an advanced level to train others.Demonstrates expert knowledgeable regarding the theory and operation of Grass polygraphs.Demonstrates expert knowledge regarding the theory and operation of ancillary devices.Utilizes Sleep Clinic montages in an appropriate manner.Demonstrates specialized ability to troubleshoot technical problems in an effective and timely manner.Appropriately instructs patients regarding hook-up procedure and testing process.Accurately and securely applies electrodes and sensors to patient, using universal standards, and according to Clinic policy and procedures. Maintains knowledge of this procedure on an advanced level. Ability to translate knowledge of procedure to training process.Demonstrates professionalism and specialization in fitting patient for nasal mask during titration tests. Expert knowledge of nasal mask interfaces.Performs and demonstrates expert knowledge of data acquisition and collection procedures according to established protocols and procedures.Expertly recognizes and eliminates artifact during data collection to meet quality standards.Provides medications to patients per physician orders and according to policy and procedures.Appropriately responds to patient care needs.Performs CPAP and Bilevel titrations according to Sleep Clinic policy and procedures. Maintains knowledge of these procedures on an advanced level. Provides comprehensive technologist notes, and log sheets during polysomnograhic testing procedures.Generates a comprehensive technologist report to reflect testing procedures, patient testing outcomes, and environmental influences.Conducts urine screen according to Kaiser policy and procedure.Safety and Infection PreventionAdvanced knowledge of Infection Prevention policies and procedures.Practices universal precautions.Reports unsafe condition, immediately.Advanced knowledge of Clinic guidelines for emergency situations during sleep recordings and/or testing procedures.Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the Sleep Clinic Emergency Resuscitation Plan.Appropriately packages and prepares electrodes and sensors, according to Sleep Clinic policy and procedures for supply processing.Patient Care Provides resources for direction, when necessary.Adjusts communication to match special age-specific needs (i.e. may need to increase volume for hearing impaired older patients).Adjusts practice/selects equipment to accommodate age-specific needs (i.e. pediatric montage)Demonstrates acceptance of patient and family regardless of race, gender, disease process, life-style, sexual orientation, religious or cultural beliefs.Responds with patient and non-patient emergencies according policies and procedures.Assists in conducting educational in services to patients relating to procedure and equipment.Demonstrates ability to provide patient follow-up care and information in an efficient and timely manner.Maintains patient privacy.Management of Information Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems.Demonstrates advanced knowledge and proficiency with file management system.Maintains confidentiality.Documents clinical information accurately and completely and within specified time.Adequately displays attention to detail in the laboratory environment.Demonstrates the ability to analyses data in a methodical, detail oriented, organized and timely manner.Maintains a required competency rate of one and half (1 1/2) hours per file for data analysis.Responsible for tracking scoring productivity for entire shift and for accountable for meeting shift scoring targets.Supervisory Responsibilities: This position motivates and provides work direction to other employees, but does not have the authority to hire, fire or discipline.Grade: 659 Basic Qualifications: Experience N/A Education High school diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.Graduation from a polysomnographic educational program approved by the Medical Board of California required. License, Certification, Registration Polysomnographic Technologist Registration (California) Polysomnographic Technologist Certificate Basic Life Support Additional Requirements:Medical Assistant Certificate or other related Health Care experience. Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience in the field of Polysomnography required.Leadership ability required.Advanced expertise in sleep data analysis and systems required.Ability to develop and implement training processes with a clear understanding of all clinic processes.Ability to develop and track quality control standards.Demonstrated proven expert knowledge and competency in all aspects of Polysomnographic testing and procedures required.Proven ability to utilize and troubleshoot standard Polysomnographic and laboratory puter proficiency and attention to detail required.Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required.Ability to work independently and accomplish a multitude of tasks within a team structure.Ability to communicate effectively with all hospital staff, physicians, and the general public.Able to work in a labor management partnership.Some college preferred.
