Summary Statement

The Library Page sorts, shelves and maintains library materials to ensure that they are always available to library patrons. Checks in returned materials and processes courier deliveries. Provides customer service and gives directions to help patrons locate materials in the library and in the online library catalog. Supports other library staff in performing basic tasks such as retrieval of materials, maintaining displays, keeping the floor areas tidy, and participating in library programs and other projects. This position works under direct supervision.Essential Functions

Performs routine tasks and assists others in more complex tasks.Sorts and shelves library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification system in alphabetical and/or chronological order. Maintains proper order of materials through frequent shelf reading and straightening. Shifts books and other materials to avoid overcrowding of shelves. Notifies appropriate staff of damaged items and any other cataloging issues that arise.Retrieves and processes returned library materials from the book drop. Checks materials for completeness and damage returns them to circulation, or forwards them to the appropriate personnel for resolution as necessary. Sorts items for hold, transit, or shelving.Provides information, directions, or referrals to assist patrons. Guides patrons on access to the online catalog and self-checkout. Collects holds placed by patrons for pick-up or to be dispatched to other library locations. Refers patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth questions or reader's advisory services.Performs proper library opening and closing procedures. Performs cleanup of library materials and public areas. Assists with the designing and maintenance of library displays and ensuring all book displays are filled.Assists and participates in library programs and ensures safety precautions are maintained in the youth service areas.Reviews and analyzes library guidelines and procedures completes mandatory development training and attends staff meetings.Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And TrainingKnowledge of:

basic computer functions and use of a mouse and keyboardlibrary rules, policies, regulations, and procedures.

Ability to:compare numbers and names quickly and accuratelylearn the Dewey Decimal Classificationprovide good customer service;follow verbal and written instructionsrelate to patrons with disabilities and children at their developmental levelmake independent judgments and suggestions on library efficiencyuse specific library softwareunderstand and comply with library rules, policies, regulations, and procedurescommunicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performanceperform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And TrainingSix or more months of experience performing customer service and shelving duties in a public library or similar setting; experience working with and providing information to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Knowledge of: adult and children's literature and of library-specific software.

Physical EffortsWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working EnvironmentThe work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.This position works: some weekends and will empty the bookdrop on holiday closures.
