The

Technology Specialist

provides high-quality customer service to library patrons in navigating and using the full range of the library’s services, with a particular emphasis on its digital resources and its technology systems and equipment, including those housed in The Studio (the library’s makerspace). This position also serves as a technology guide for the public and for Library staff, coordinating and providing training in a variety of formats. This position is responsible for overseeing and planning the maintenance, resupplying, and eventual replacement of equipment housed in the Studio, and any related software components. Lastly, this position regularly staffs customer service points, primarily the main reference desk and the lower-level reference desk.

Starting pay range $26 - $28.75 per hour

This full-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule

: To be determined in coordination between the successful candidate and their supervisor. Some evenings and weekends will be required, in support of the Library’s schedule of public service hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates, provides, and assists with training for patrons and staff on the use of various library technology systems and equipment, including those housed in The Studio, and with the creation of any related instructional materials.

Oversees maintenance of equipment in The Studio; coordinates restocking of supplies and consumables.

Provides general reference services and assists customers in navigating and using the library’s range of services, during scheduled shifts at customer service points.

Responds to reference and technology-related questions from patrons and staff by telephone, in person, chat, and through email.

Along with Adult Services Supervisor, may interface with the City’s IT department and with vendors on matters related to Library’s technology systems and equipment.

May often work in coordination with the library’s Communications Specialist on public communication and marketing efforts.

Performs other similar duties and related projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in library science, communications, multi-media production or related field; and

Two (2) years of public library work experience; or

An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Eagerness to generate and explore new ideas, learn new technologies and systems, take risks, lead and/or support changes and innovations, and solve problems creatively.

Strong project management skills to implement new technology services to best serve patrons and staff.

Ability to operate independently within broad parameters, using own professional judgment.

Ability to work in partnership and collaboration with colleagues in the library, in other departments of the City, and in other agencies.

Solid knowledge of general library principles and procedures to perform the essential duties of the position.

Advanced ability with the Microsoft 365 suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Forms, and Stream.

Advanced ability with photo editing, video editing, graphics editing, and desktop publishing software.

Ability to troubleshoot and advise on technology issues.

Ability to navigate computer information systems, and access and retrieve desired information.

Ability to assist and instruct customers and staff in the use of computer-based technologies and equipment.

Strong public speaking skills to make presentations in small or large groups.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Work for this position is generally performed indoors in a public building environment. This work may include occasional exposure to dust from books and electrical hazards from computer equipment. Some of the work is performed outdoors assisting with library programs. This work environment includes prevailing weather conditions.

Requires frequent lifting and carrying of books weighing 0-50 pounds, retrieving books and other materials from bookshelves at heights ranging from one foot to seven feet; frequent pushing of wheeled book carts weighing 50-100 pounds with or without assistance.
