Job Summary
This Patron-focused position is responsible for library organization, assisting the public with finding material and answering questions about library services. This position can work up to 28 hours per week with one weeknight and every other Saturday required. This position will work under the direction and close supervision of the Library Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESMeet the library's customer service standards in all interactions with the public and staff.Performs circulation and reference desk duties including, but not limited to, answering phones, assisting patrons, creating library card accounts, checking in and out materials, placing holds, and collecting fees for lost/damaged items.Assists patrons with faxes, and copies, retrieves prints, and performs basic computer support as requested.Comfortable with standard responses to frequently asked questions (FAQs) from the public.Able to recommend appropriate reading material based on the customer's need.Understand and apply knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System when shelving or locating non-fiction materials.Understand and utilize the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL)Answers directional questions and refers patrons to appropriate personnel.Shelves, "shelf reads" and keeps the library organized and user-friendly including maintaining library exhibits and displays as requested.Performs custodial duties as necessary.Occasionally assists with implementing programs and conducting outreach activities.Other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED required.Must be at least 18 years old.Mathematical ability: calculate fees and copier money and make correct change.Time management skills: set priorities and meet assigned deadlines.Communication skills; both written and oralReading ability; effectively read and understand information in written form.Ability to comprehend and follow instructions.Must possess a valid Tennessee Drivers' License or could obtain one in a reasonable period.SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of practices of public libraries, basic library principles, and procedures.Positive, enthusiastic, patron-oriented approach to public service.Ability to accept delegation and work under general direction with or without close supervisionAbility to provide individual instruction on library, literary, and basic technology topics.Ability to represent the City of La Vergne professionally and respectfully always.PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and stand; talk or listen. The employee is constantly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Public Service and Patron Interaction : The Library Assistant works primarily within the library, engaging directly with patrons of all ages to assist, including locating materials, answering inquiries, and facilitating access to library services. This role emphasizes a strong service orientation, requiring excellent communication skills, patience, and a friendly demeanor.
Collection and Resource Management : Assistants are involved in a variety of tasks related to the management of library materials, such as shelving books, organizing materials, and maintaining the overall tidiness of library spaces. This includes checking in and out materials, managing holds, and assisting with inventory and cataloging processes.
Program and Event Support : Library Assistants play a supportive role in library programs and events, assisting with the planning, setup, and execution of activities that engage the community, such as reading programs, workshops, and special events. This may involve coordinating logistics, preparing materials, and interacting with participants.
Collaborative Team Environment : While collaboration with the library team remains crucial, part-time Library Assistants may operate more independently during certain shifts or in specific roles. This requires a proactive approach to tasks, effective time management, and the ability to work autonomously while maintaining alignment with the library's goals and standards.
Technology and Digital Resources : The role involves assisting patrons with technology within the library, including public computers, printers, e-readers, and online databases. Library Assistants help patrons navigate digital resources, troubleshoot basic technology issues, and guide on accessing digital library services.
Learning and Professional Development : Although part-time, Library Assistants are encouraged to engage with ongoing learning opportunities and professional development. This engagement may be tailored to align with the reduced hours, focusing on training or updates that are most relevant to their specific duties and schedules within the library.
Flexible Schedule : This position is not remote. As a part-time Library Assistant, the work schedule is designed to offer flexibility, accommodating a variety of hours that may include evenings, weekends, and occasional special events. This flexibility is essential to support the library's operational needs while balancing the part-time nature of the role.
