Mechanical Designer

You will be creating and executing designs for engineering solutions as part of the team in ANSI (American National Standards Institute ) Switchgear LV (Low Voltage) and MV (Medium Voltage), Electrification Distribution Solutions (ELDS) in Mebane, North Carolina, This includes drawings, calculations, bill of materials, engineering instructions and processes. You will be responsible to create mechanical designs that require knowledge of ANSI Air Insulated Switchgear to effectively achieve objectives. Assignments typically require the use of advanced and innovative techniques. In this role, you will proactively seek and implement initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.

Your responsibilities
Utilize 3D modeling to designs engineering solutions, including drawings and calculations according to contractual specificationCreates or reviews engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or constructionContributes to design reviews and design verification, modifies design, as necessaryReview mechanical bill of material accuracy and work with project engineers to achieve desired mechanical component orderingEnsure all designs work to meet company, industry and customer's technical standards/requirements (that is NEC (National Electrical Code - USA ), ANSI, IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), customer project specifications, etc.)Perform tolerance and mechanical stress analysis as necessarySupport mechanical designs for New Product IntroductionsCoordinates with Manufacturing and Testing functions to ensure the designs are appropriately manufactured/staged and tested. Updates the engineering deliverables as builtProvide feedback and solutions to project managers and project engineers to meet customer needsCreate and document standards for mechanical designsCoordinates with Commissioning / Service functions to ensure the designs are appropriately installed and commissioned (if applicable as part of the contract). Updates the engineering deliverables post installation & commissioning (if applicable)Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to drive improvements in efficiency, quality and/or customer satisfactionUses standard processes and tools and provide feedback for improvement and maintenance of the respective engineering tools and systems (that is, symbol libraries, guidelines, reference documents, engineering system usability, etc.)Participates in project meetings and presents specific aspects of design assignmentsTechnical leadership and knowledge sharing. Actively contributes and shares experiences in workshops pertaining to engineering design, tools and processes. Shares best practices Lessons Learned documentation across different projects
Your background
Bachelor's Degree or Associate Degree and minimum 2 years of experience in Customer Application Engineering or Mechanical DesignAssociates degree in Engineering Technology or a related field and 5 plus years of relevant experience preferredBachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field and 3 plus years of relevant experience preferredStrong interpersonal skillsMust be self motivated with a high level of creativityComplex problem solving skills requiredExperience in dealing with the cultural diversity of a global business environmentExperience working in a manufacturing environment and specifically with steel or copper fabricationExperience with electrical distribution equipmentProficient with AutoCAD (recent version) or equivalent computer aided design platform. Computer Aided Design certification or degree preferredExperience with 3D design including use of Creo, Solidworks or equivalent design platformsFamiliar and have practical experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, SAP, Windchill and other applicable softwareCandidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
