Positions assigned to this class perform a variety of specialized and technical duties, including receiving and processing materials; provides library circulation functions and patron support.
Essential Duties
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.
- Answer phones and direct calls; answer reference questions and refer difficult or technical questions to appropriate library staff; assist patrons in locating materials; place requests for patrons; print and fill holds lists and notices.
- Check in and out library materials; issue and renew library cards; collect fees; empty return bins and check in library materials, sort items, inspect library materials for damage and repair; make minor repairs to library materials, print new labels and clean discs as needed.
- Prepare print and non-print materials into the library's collection; apply barcodes, book jackets, labels, stamps, and security tags.
- Shelve books, audio/visual material, newspapers, periodicals, and other library materials alphabetically or by Dewey Decimal Classification number; read shelves for accuracy of order; sort and move heavy book bins, book trucks and carts of heavy library materials.
- Create and review purchase orders; submit orders electronically to vendors; receive and verify supply shipments; prepare invoices for payment.
- May assist with mail pickup and delivery; may run library-related errands that require the operation of a city vehicle.
- Perform opening and closing duties, process daily monetary deposits.
- Provide copy cataloging and classification for library materials; edit existing catalog records as needed; download bibliographic MARC (Machines Readable Cataloging) records; verify or add item records into the library's integrated library system.
- Enter data into a personal computer, maintain records, create reports, tabulate statistics.
- May be assigned to assist with various projects or events.
- May mentor, train, and assign work to volunteers and lower-level staff to support the City's policies, goals, and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years full-time library or customer service experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supplemental Information
Knowledge
- City and Department procedures, policies, and guidelines; City Code; Arizona Revised Statutes.
- Alpha and numeric sorting and sorting systems; record retention; general accounting and cash handling.
Skills
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software; navigating library catalogs.
- Providing quality customer service.
Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for an appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification, and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver's license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed indoors. May require frequent walking, standing, bending, stretching, sitting, and operation of a personal computer. May be required to perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds and push and maneuver loaded book carts and bins weighing up to 200 pounds. May be required to operate a city vehicle. Some evening and weekend work is required.
