Concordia University Chicago (CUC), in River Forest, IL, invites applications for the Full-Time, Exempt position of Graphic Designer. This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for University Communication.
The Graphic Designer position serves as the overall brand champion and professional designer for the University, collaborating with team members and other University department staff to move projects from initial intake to completed project.
The graphic designer works closely with all team members to ensure accuracy, relevancy and visual impact of all materials produced, while clearly conveying the University's branding, image and messaging. The graphic designer is also responsible for maintaining and utilizing digital asset management and project management tools, as well as providing guidance to the Assistant Vice President and other University departments on design technology and software.
As a member of the University Communications and Marketing Services team, the graphic designer collaborates in all department activities and provides ongoing guidance and communications support to achieve department, strategic enrollment and University goals.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Lead graphic designer for branded University materials, provide and coordinate design, layout and production for a wide scope of projects including but not limited to internal and external banners and signage, recruitment materials, commencement and special event materials, digital marketing materials for social media and web usage, promotional items, University publications, presentation materials, logos, and collateral materials. All materials are produced through University Communications and Marketing Services primarily for external distribution.
Work closely with communications, advancement, enrollment, academic, and administrative units to understand project goals and deliver effective design solutions.
Intake and assess new projects with department team, working closely with entire Communications Services team for copywriting, photography and additional communications support.
Consult with and advise clients regarding objectives and outcomes within allotted budgets to develop effective design concepts and materials that achieve those needs while advancing the University's mission.
Meet multiple deadlines and ensure an effective process for outcomes that results in client satisfaction, attractive and error-free communications, quality control and consistent standards clearly conveying the University's branding, messaging and image.
Work closely with supervisor to maintain production schedules.
Ensure high quality and timely receipt, delivery and distribution of projects within budget parameters and deadlines.
As required, coordinate production with internal staff/units and vendors on quotes, file coordination, technical specifications, postal service and copyright standards.
Provide technical guidance and support to team members, other University units and external vendors and designers on design technology and software.
Responsible for providing direction and maintaining standards for university logo usage, branding and visual identity, in conjunction with Assistant Vice President and all team members.
Monitor industry trends in graphic design, typography, digital media, and technology to keep creative work fresh and competitive.
Review and proofread all design work carefully before production or publication to maintain high standards of visual excellence.

Experience/Skills
Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a design, marketing/communications and production role including coordination with print vendors and postal service requirements.
Demonstrated keen understanding and implementation of effective marketing/communications, branding and visual standards, effective design principles and production processes, including current trends, technology and practice.
Superb technical design skills and knowledge, including expertise with the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator). Strong familiarity and skill with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word and PowerPoint) required. Familiarity with website design and social media applications to ensure print and digital design work are compatible. Comfortable with Mac and/or PC environments.
Excellent editing and additional copywriting skills.
Expertise with 35mm and digital photography strongly preferred.
Understanding of accessible design principles (e.g., color contrast, alt text) to ensure ADA-compliant materials.
Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments with excellent organization, planning and attention to details in collaboration with others.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to prioritize and to consistently meet deadlines is essential.
Outstanding written and verbal communication, interpersonal, analysis and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work both independently and in team settings.
Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, advertising or related field.
Demonstrated commitment to learning and continuous improvement.
An appreciation for, and commitment to, Christian higher education.
Preferred:
Master's degree preferred.
Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations preferred.
