Description
Under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, assists with the supervision and training of department staff; assists customers with checking out library materials, and registering for library cards. Provides prompt and friendly service to customers of all ages at the checkout desk; serves as team supervisor; performs a variety of tasks required to maintain the collection in good order. Answers questions for customers and other staff, interprets library policies, and solves problems for library customers in a cordial and efficient way. Assists with check-in, materials handling, and other tasks necessary to maintain efficiently the constant heavy flow of items through the department.
Start date will be after July 1, 2025.

Examples of Duties
- Assists the Access Services Manager in supervising Library Assistants and Page staff
- Responsible for supervision of a team of 10-15 café page staff members
- Provides training and feedback, drafts performance reviews, and supports staff in their day-to-day duties
- Handles difficult customer interactions prior to referring them to the department manager
- Solves customer's problems and concerns
- Utilizes the integrated library system effectively and efficiently
- Issues and updates library cards in-person and online
- Monitors the operation of and assists customers with self-check computers
- Monitors the operation of the automatic materials handling equipment and assists staff with its use and procedures
- Checks in and inspects library materials
- Greets customers and answers questions
- Collects fees, when applicable
- Assists customers by telephone, email, and curbside
- Promotes library programs and services with customers
- Assists with shelving and pulls items requested by customers as needed
- Develops and updates café staffing schedules
- Oversees and assists in daily operations of the café and café manager
- Assists with shifts in the café, as needed
- Participates in training and certification for supervisory shifts in the café
- Maintains a clean and organized workspace
- Assists with training staff and volunteers
- Participates in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology and safety training
- Provides excellent internal and external customer service
- Other duties as assigned
- Ability to learn and perform routine library functions and procedures accurately and efficiently
- Ability to learn and use the integrated library system
- Proficiency in workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to learn operation of and troubleshoot automated materials handling equipment
- Ability to learn and operate cash register and apply money collecting procedures
- Ability to coordinate the work of others
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep the department operating to a standard and to set a positive example for Access staff

- Ability to learn and apply café procedures as well as maintain the appropriate food manager certification
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
- Schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend rotations
- Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule
- Good vision and hearing to effectively engage with customers
- Manual dexterity to operate computer and phone equipment
- Familiar with software programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Physical ability to regularly lift library materials weighing up to 40 pounds, push fully loaded carts of library materials, as well as bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves
- Satisfactory pre-employment background check
- Bachelor degree required
- One year of supervisory or team leader experience preferred
- Public library experience preferred
- Customer service experience preferred
- Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is helpful
- Any combination of experience and education that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities
The Champaign Public Library offers a comprehensive benefit package to regular full- and part-time employees that includes paid sick leave, vacation, and nine paid holidays each year.
Employees working 29 hours or less are not eligible for health insurance.
