Library Summary:
The Homewood Public Library is located just south of Birmingham, Alabama. Serving a community of over 26,000 residents, it is part of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative, allowing all Jefferson County residents to use the facility. The award-winning library features a 53,000-square-foot space with auditoriums, meeting rooms, and study rooms. It operates 67 hours weekly with 23 full-time and 30 part-time employees. The library has an annual budget of over $3 million, supported actively by the Homewood Library Foundation and the Friends of the Homewood Library.
Job Summary:
Under general supervision, provides excellent customer service, performs clerical duties, assists with reader advisory, contributes to online content, and supports other departments as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a welcoming demeanor when assisting patrons.
- Work scheduled times at the public desk.
- Create and update library cards.
- Assist with reader advisory services in person, virtually, and by phone.
- Locate materials for patrons and manage holds.
- Assist patrons with digital resources, equipment, and software.
- Support other departments as needed.
- Handle interlibrary loan and in-house reserved materials.
- Participate in curbside services when required.
- Engage in educational opportunities to enhance skills.
- Shelve books and assist with library events and displays.
Job Specifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of library functions, Dewey Decimal system, and library software (Sierra), internet, and Windows systems.
- Effective time management and communication skills.
- Ability to operate basic library equipment and alphabetize.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with patrons and staff.
- Physical ability to stand, stoop, push, carry, and maneuver among shelves.
Credentials and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required; three years of related customer service preferred.
Special Requirements:
Willingness to undergo criminal background check and drug testing.
Hours, Salary, and Benefits:
Salary: $15.75/hour, 19 hours/week, including some nights and weekends (Thursday evenings until 9 PM, and two weekends per month).
