General Assignment Business Reporter
The San Antonio Express-News seeks an enterprising, flexible reporter to cover general business news in the nation’s seventh-largest city and one of its fastest-growing.
The successful applicant will be fast off the mark, nimble, quick to learn and able to turn around assignments on a variety of business-related subjects with a digital-first focus.
The reporter might be asked to cover a corporate earnings report one day, a CEO resignation the next and a trend story several days later.
The Express-News business news department covers energy, auto manufacturing, trade, aerospace, cybersecurity, real estate, health care, insurance, retail, tourism, economic development, the region’s major companies and its major industries. Companies of focus include Toyota, Tesla, Valero, USAA, SpaceX, Boeing, H-E-B and Whataburger. Stories of high interest sometimes fall between established beats, which creates an opportunity for a multiskilled business generalist.
The reporter will be encouraged to develop original enterprise, and there is significant potential for upward mobility based on performance.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three to five years of experience in daily journalism
- Familiarity with basic principles of business journalism, including ability to read and understand an earnings statement
- Fluency in the fundamentals of digital publishing, including but not limited to SEO, digital headline writing and social media promotion.
The Express-News is the third-largest daily newspaper in Texas and the only daily in San Antonio. It serves a metro area of 2.5 million people.
