Overview
The San Francisco Chronicle seeks an editor to lead its award-winning Food & Wine team. This editor will lead the team’s daily operations, ensuring we are first to news on openings, closings, trends and industry happenings. They will manage the work of our restaurant and wine critics, including the strategic direction for our Top Restaurants and Wineries program and all other utility food guides. And they will shepherd ambitious enterprise pieces about the dining world of the Bay Area and how we eat. Candidates should be strong editors who can deliver polished copy in a fast-paced environment, and improve structure and framing for longer stories. Key to this role will be working with the audience team on publication strategy, and working with desks including photo, video, design and graphics to think about visual assets that maximize a story’s impact. We are looking for a positive and creative communicator who thrives in a collaborative environment and holds a deep commitment to journalism that is fair and inclusive.
What you will do:
● Lead the Chronicle’s Food and Wine coverage
● Edit a team of seven, including an editor, food and wine writers, and restaurant critics
● Work collaboratively with teams, including digital, photo, data and design
● Coordinate Top Restaurants and Top Wineries programs
● Manage freelance reporter and expense budget
What it will take to be successful:
● At least five years’ experience at a daily newspaper, magazine or web publication or the equivalent as a reporter and/or editor
● Demonstrated expertise in reporting and writing, with strong news judgment
● Knowledge of SEO best practices, audience engagement and other strategies to serve readers
● Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment
● A passion for the food and wine beat
In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $90,000 to $120,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
