Job Description
The Director of Multimedia serves as a key leader within Syracuse University’s creative team. The Director is responsible for implementing a creative strategy through dynamic multimedia to strengthen the University brand and advance the university’s priorities and goals. They manage the multimedia team and can lead the teams to leverage multimedia to advance digital and content marketing programs and integrated marketing strategies. They play a pivotal operational role, with the solid ability to oversee workload and workflow, technology, systems and process.
Highly collaborative and communicative, the Director is often a key liaison between other channel teams and the multimedia team, ensure that projects are well planned, resourced and therefore delivered on-time and on-budget. A brand champion, the Director works closely with their team, other Creative leaders and the CMO to ensure the university’s story is consistently brought to life. They are effective at leading a dynamic technical team of photographers, videographers, producers, and editors day-to-day, moving with agility /speed to translate marketing and digital strategies into consistent and compelling content and stories.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8-10 years of experience developing strategic creative, multimedia programs.
- Minimum of 5 years leading global multimedia teams as part of a modern marketing operations in order to advance strategic marketing goals.
- Minimum of 3 years of technical marketing experience.
- Understands multimedia delivery across multiple mediums, impact of how to deliver multimedia project across mobile, digital and other platforms.
- Dynamic, contemporary modern marketer with deep experience in multimedia production and storytelling, scriptwriting, multichannel marketing.
- Significant experience/technical understanding shooting, editing and archiving systems and approaches.
- Move with urgency and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Work effectively under pressure of last-minute deadlines/changing priorities.
- Understanding digital media/social platforms. Requires advanced knowledge of video post-production related software including, but not limited to Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshelter, Illustrator, Photoshop, asset management system.
- Close visual acuity to perform tasks related the production of content.
- Ability to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels w/or w/o correction.
- Ability to move Audio/Visual equipment across campus to various sites, for events; ability to move, lift, set up and break down videography equipment.
- Ability to lift 25-50 lbs. repeatedly at multiple assignments.
- Flexibility/ability to position oneself to shoot a variety of images. Photo/video shoots may require standing, sitting, and kneeling for 4-8 hours.
- Leads multimedia team in capturing and creating multimedia content that advances the brand and creative/marketing strategies.
- Manages multimedia team, ensuring creative output is of the highest standards and brings the brand to life in meaningful and dynamic ways.
- Ensures hundreds of projects are completed on time and on budget.
- Works closely with other team members to help assign and coordinate workflow, workload and scoping of projects in order to meet needs of the organization.
- Uses deep technical knowledge to be a key liaison between other marketing channel teams and the multimedia team to be nimble and effective in balancing dozens of projects simultaneously.
- Is an excellent communicator and collaborator, in order to trouble-shoot and problem solve.
- Is a systems-thinker, is organized in helping the team manage production processes and timelines. Provides creative leadership within group and across teams.
- Build and effectively implement strategic and operational plan for multimedia area.
- Works with other marketing and communications team to streamline process, creative presentation standards and other critical infrastructure.
- Well versed in modern marketing trends and practices.
- Understands and can lead team to leverage multimedia to advance digital and content marketing programs.
- Collaborates with other leaders and team members on development of creative strategies to leverage multimedia to advance high-profile marketing campaigns.
- Serves as strategic contributor on leveraging video /multimedia to advance marketing campaigns. Use excellent technical expertise in shooting, editing and producing, to partner with the team to trouble-shoot, problem-solve and effectively approach projects.
- Serve as art director or lead creative on select discreet projects.
- Coach, mentor and guide members of the multimedia team on effective ways to bring the brand to life.
- Reviews & signs off on certain multimedia elements or projects.
- Effectively leads and manages multimedia teams, ensuring creative output is of high standards and brings the brand to life in meaningful and dynamic ways.
- Demonstrates leadership in translating marketing data and insight into creative decision-making. Collaborates effectively with the Design team to move creative concepts to multimedia production. Guides team members in effective ways to express conceptual design in multimedia platforms. Designs creative brand experiences including for experiential opportunities.
- Partners effectively with marketing strategy and business unit teams to understand audiences and goals and to translate into effective multimedia approaches.
- Partners with Digital Team to ensure that timely and relevant multimedia content is captured and packaged effectively.
- Ensures integration, alignment and collaboration in planning and resource management across all teams.
- Identifies ways to speed content collection to market for effective storytelling and brand experiences.
- Partners with Director of Marketing Technology to put in place and leverage modern technology solutions.
- Responsible for ensuring systems allow for appropriate digitizing, archiving and logging of multimedia content so it is searchable and well maintained.
- Tracks impact/engagement measures to guide creative decision making.
- Shapes best-in-class creative culture, mentoring talent and facilitation of career growth.
