Job Description
The Syracuse University Libraries invites applications for the Student Success and Engagement (SS&E) Librarian within our Learning and Academic Engagement (LAE) Department. The SS&E Librarian will contribute to the work of the department by serving as liaison to the University departments of Athletics, Retention and Student Success, and other departments within the Student Experience unit, and providing general reference, instructional, and outreach services. Reporting to the Head of the LAE Department, the SS&E Librarian will actively contribute to LAE department goals and serve on cross-unit teams that focus on Libraries-wide projects and initiatives as needed. The SS&E Librarian will work both independently and collaboratively with other LAE Librarians, Libraries’ colleagues, and campus partners to contribute to a shared vision of the Libraries’ role in student success.
Education and Experience
Required qualifications:
- MLIS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Experience providing user services in a library setting required.
Desired qualifications:
- Experience in planning, implementing or contributing to user engagement activities in an academic library setting.
- At least one year of experience providing user-facing services in an academic library setting.

Responsibilities
Liaison and outreach services
- Serve as liaison to the University departments of Athletics, Retention and Student Success, and other departments within the Student Experience unit.
- Collaborate with staff in liaison areas to develop and provide outreach services and programs to engage undergraduate students and promote Libraries resources and services.
- Work with other librarians in the Department of Learning and Academic Engagement to integrate input from liaison areas into user experience efforts.
- Assist with planning and implementing LAE department-coordinated events.
Instruction services:
- Participate in the Libraries’ undergraduate, introductory information literacy instruction program as a member of the Libraries’ Instruction Team.
- Provide information literacy and instructional services for liaison areas.
Reference and information services:
- Provide the full range of general and interdisciplinary reference services, both in-person and virtual, including local and consortial chat, email reference, and off-desk consultations.
- Model best practices for reference and customer service.
- Provide reference training and ongoing support to new staff and graduate student employees as needed.
Professional development and service:
- Participate in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned.
- Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the University, and the library profession.
- Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one’s knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one’s performance and service contributions.
