South Dakota State University’s ( SDSU ) Hilton M. Briggs Library welcomes applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Librarian rank. We seek an energetic, collaborative librarian with a passion for information literacy and student success. The successful candidate will coordinate the library’s first-year instruction initiatives, foster partnerships with campus units focused on student success, as well as provide reference, research, and instruction services. The position reports to the Head of Public Services, is located onsite in Brookings, South Dakota , and is full-time and benefits-eligible with a contract year of 12 months.
The Hilton M. Briggs Library fosters academic excellence, collaborative endeavor, creative scholarship, student engagement, and lifelong curiosity. The library serves all SDSU academic disciplines and holds approximately 775,000 bound volumes and 600,000 government documents and provides access to over 100,000 electronic journals as well as e-books and streaming videos. The library building offers a variety of collaborative and individual workspaces.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Coordinates library curriculum and instructional activities for general education courses in written and oral communication, first-year experience seminars, and other courses targeting first-year students in collaboration with other librarians and departmental program coordinators.
- Participates in ongoing assessment of student learning and works closely with other librarians in the creation, implementation, and assessment of learning objectives for first-year information literacy initiatives.
- Engages in outreach and collaboration with key campus partners that support the first-year experience, e.g., student success, tutoring centers, admissions, and other areas of SDSU .
- Provides leadership to the library’s Events & Publicity Committee. Contributes to the development of library programming and efforts to promote the library to students.
- Serves as subject librarian for the School of Communication and Journalism, the School of English and Interdisciplinary Studies, and/or other academic units as assigned, providing collection development, library instruction, and research assistance.
- Provides reference service in person and via chat at a general service desk, including staffing weekend and evening shifts as assigned.
- Keeps up to date on pedagogical theories and practices, particularly as they relate to first-year students.
- Designs and produces instructional materials in various formats, including online tutorials, user guides, and training materials to meet a variety of student needs.
- Serves the library, SDSU , and the profession through committee work and other contributions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- ALA -accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent by the time of hire.
- Teaching experience, preferably in an academic library setting.
- Experience providing general reference service.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial, team-based environment and maintain positive working relationships.
- Knowledge of trends and services in higher education and academic libraries to support first-year experience programs.
- Familiarity with issues and trends in libraries as well as higher education.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as a strong service orientation.
- One or more years of experience working in academic libraries.
- Knowledge of and experience with information literacy concepts and trends.
- Experience with instruction in face-to-face, online, and blended environments, including the design of interactive instructional materials and activities.
- Experience providing reference services in both in-person and virtual environments such as Zoom and chat.
- Experience with assessment of student learning and instructional programming.
- Experience in planning, implementing or contributing to user engagement activities in an academic library setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary and emerging information technologies such as artificial intelligence, web authoring tools and technologies, social media, digital learning objects, screen casting, and LibGuides.
- Additional advanced degree.
