Benefits Compliance Document Editor/Writer
100% Remote - Central or East Coast preferred
Compensation: $60–$85 per hour, based on experience
Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Document Editor/Writer with an understanding of employee benefits, compliance requirements, and document accessibility.
This is a fully remote, contract-based role running from May through September, with flexible hours and a variable workload each month:
- May: ~10 hours (training)
- June: ~60 hours
- July: ~120 hours
- August: ~90 hours
- September: ~80 hours
The contractor will support editing, formatting, and reviewing benefits-related documents—such as Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs), Summaries of Material Modifications (SMMs), enrollment guides, and benefits brochures. Documents must meet legal, accessibility (Section 508/WCAG), and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Edit and format benefits documents using Microsoft Word.
- Ensure accessibility compliance (WCAG/Section 508), including alt text, heading structures, and tagged elements.
- Review content for clarity, grammar, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
- Incorporate stakeholder feedback into document drafts.
- Perform final QA checks for consistency, formatting, and accessibility.
- Identify and recommend solutions to formatting or content issues.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience editing and writing compliance documents, ideally in benefits, insurance, or healthcare.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG/Section 508) and tools like Adobe Acrobat Pro or Microsoft Accessibility Checker.
- High attention to detail with strong editing and QA skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote setting.
- Clear communication and collaborative working style.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in HR, benefits, legal, or insurance compliance writing.
- Understanding of plain language guidelines and legal document simplification.
