Your expertise in technical building solutions in architectural design and construction will deliver innovation to maintain our facilities as industry leading. Amazon is seeking a Sr. Technical Architect within the Global Realty Building Design (GBD) team, who is responsible for developing innovative and sustainable customer fulfillment and logistics building solutions for Worldwide Operations. The successful candidate will support cross functional teams by creating Amazon’s design criteria and apply design standards that govern the performance criteria of these technologically advanced facilities. This includes responsibility for coordination of up to 30 technical, operational, and functional stakeholder groups representing internal operations, process design, engineering, critical security and safety in the development of integrated facility designs.

The Sr. Technical Architect will utilize expertise in building and material sciences, industry best practices, and clear success KPIs to oversee the development of concept building designs (templates) for highly complex facilities in consideration of emerging technologies. The Sr. Technical Architect will partner with Sr. Design Program Managers that have single-threaded-ownership of the building design program and internal customer management. They will interact daily with external architects, engineers, and technical consultants to produce high quality documentation in a fully integrated building information modeling (BIM) environment. The Sr. Technical Architect is a group-wide resource with deep expertise in complex architectural design and engineering systems. They should possess a passion for challenging the status quo to the benefit of operational excellence.

In this role you will use your analytical skills, critical thinking, attention-to-detail, and ability to synthesize many moving parts and competing demands to drive technical design. You will have a sense of urgency, the ability to influence and make sound judgement calls, and willingness to roll up your sleeves to do the work that is required. You will have significant experience developing highly technical architectural, structural, and civil designs including technical details and specifications. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an ever-changing environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or conflicting priorities.

Key job responsibilities

• Provide technical building and material science expertise, sustainable design solutions, architectural & engineering advancements, and technical specifications

• Provide support to building design teams for detailing, systems, components, products, and materials

• Provide deep knowledge and experience to building design teams for complex and technically challenging buildings, including large facilities with alternative structural designs such as mass timber, rack-clad, and high rise design solutions

• Provide technical design and quality reviews at various milestones throughout the design process to ensure building designs are compliant with design standards

• Generate use cases for pilots of emerging methods and building technologies to further business impact through construction innovation

• Serve as a model of excellence establishing business requirements, design team collaboration, and stakeholder alignment

• Assist with driving a world class associate experience and operational efficiency are part of the building design

• Assist with the management of third-party architects, engineers and designers responsible for creating the building design templates (i.e. prototypes) for customer fulfillment and/or logistics buildings.

• Assist with preparation and presentation of strategic design discussions at various levels

• Assist with the coordination of workshops that drive alignment on key issues, design practices, new building designs, and initiatives

• Sets an example by staying current with professional continuing education as well as product and material innovations

Your insights across building programs will inform complex, multi-disciplinary technical teams, often with conflicting priorities, to build confidence in design decision making.

About the team

Global Realty Building Design (GBD) is the single-threaded-owner of building design templates (prototype design) that provide innovative and technical solutions for the Worldwide Operations network from within the Global Realty Development organization. GBD leverages technology and tools to develop key insights to create industry leading logistics building designs that are safe, sustainable, efficient, economical, and innovative for Worldwide Operations real estate in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering

10+ years of experience in architecture and program management with demonstrated experience with sustainable, high-performance technical industrial or similar projects

6+ years of experience leading large, multi-disciplinary design teams, consultants, and vendors

Building design & construction project management experience from programming, design, construction, and operations including project planning for scope, schedule, and costs

Experience with Revit, Bluebeam, BIM360, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite

Familiarity of technology implementation strategy and understanding in support of architectural innovation in the industry

Ability to Dive Deep to help understand product processing and integration with buildings

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, or business

Experience implementing and managing a building design program including development of templates (i.e. prototypes), technical specifications, and design standards

Experience proposing and piloting new building technologies for adoption at scale through clear methodologies for ensuring success

Excellent time management, organization, and attention to detail

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Recent and documented professional continuing education

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $118,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
