W. W. Norton & Company, a distinguished book publishing firm, seeks an entry-level assistant for the trade publicity department based at its New York City headquarters. Founded in 1923, Norton is the oldest and largest publishing house owned entirely by its employees. Norton’s trade division publishes a wide variety of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Norton authors include Michael Lewis, Richard Powers, Neil Gaiman, Joy Harjo, Saidiya Hartman, Emily Wilson, Stephen Greenblatt, Rita Dove, Robert Pinsky, and Nobel Prize-winning economists Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz. Over the years, Norton authors have received National Book Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and Nobel Prizes among many other honors.
The Publicity Assistant position requires a bright, energetic, detail-oriented, highly organized person with superior writing and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. This person must stay calm under pressure and prioritize quickly. The Publicity Assistant will report to the Executive Publicity Director and will work closely with one other senior publicist. They will help at every stage of the publicity campaigns.
Essential Job Responsibilities Include:
- Assisting publicists on promotional campaigns for front list titles by researching appropriate press contacts and drafting pitch letters to be sent to reviewers, editors, and producers
- Developing press materials and coordinating pre-publication review mailings
- Executing email outreach throughout various stages of publicity campaign
- Arranging author events and coordinating author travel
- Ensuring author requests and media queries are promptly responded to
- Maintaining an archive of review and media coverage
- Creating and circulating departmental roundups and reports
- Processing invoices and expenses related to book tours

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communications skills
- Excellent time-management skills
- Attention to detail
- An interest in following the news and interacting with the press
- The ability to develop and maintain relationships with all levels of employees
- An interest in history, business and general non-fiction books
- Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and database applications.
- Mastery of email and calendar management tools, specifically Outlook
- Must be able to work from Norton’s New York City Headquarters.
- Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required
Currently available benefits*:
- Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location and like considerations.
