Library Associates
Primarily help with public-facing library tasks, including circulating materials, reference transactions, and program assistance. Duties include providing excellent customer service to meet user circulation and reference needs; reader's advisory; displays; promoting and aiding with adult and juvenile programs and outreach services; and providing some general office support. Work schedules vary and include weekend and evening shifts. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Directors and is evaluated through conferences, observations, reports, and public response. Considerable judgment and discretion are required in performing all library functions.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Assess customer information and service needs, provide appropriate resources, and assist customers in locating, accessing, and borrowing library print and electronic resources.
- Conduct readers’ advisory interview sessions with customers and suggest titles and resources.
- Create engaging, interactive environments within the Library.
- Greet the public as they arrive and make them feel welcome.
- Use all software and hardware to provide information and conduct transactions for library patrons.
- Make referrals to other staff and external resources as appropriate.
- Maintain proper order and condition of all library materials.
- Gather and collate library statistics and usage data.
- Respond to incoming calls and emails, referring inquiries to appropriate staff.
- Organize, promote, produce, and evaluate library programs and events for all age groups.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of personal computers, including MS Office programs.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with library computers and software, and assist patrons with personal technology.
- Basic clerical skills, including keyboarding and knowledge of decimal order.
- Strong spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills.
- Ability to produce accurate, clear, and complete written documents.
- Ability to follow procedures and perform detailed work.
- Teamwork skills to accomplish shared goals.
- Effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Ability to promote interest in library services and present programs effectively.
Desirable Experience and Training
Undergraduate degree required. Experience in library work and public interaction preferred. Experience with Windows-based software required. Must have a valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record.
Physical Requirements
Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs to handle books, assist patrons, and organize shelves.
