Position Summary
The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for a Part-Time Library Assistant.
The role involves assisting in overseeing the checkout area, attending to the Library Services counter, providing excellent customer service, enforcing policies, and maintaining order in the library. The position requires working some weekend hours regularly.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Supervise student staff during weekend shifts for checkout activities and train students as needed.
- Support activities of the Rice Library Testing Center by proctoring tests and providing clerical support following authorized procedures.
- Assist patrons with loan and return of library materials, and help with library resources such as printers, computers, and media equipment.
- Guide patrons in navigating the library website and online resources like room reservations, catalog, and information systems.
- Respond to questions via phone, chat, or email, and direct inquiries to the appropriate offices or individuals.
- Perform routine security checks, respond to alarms, and help maintain a quiet, orderly environment. Keep the Circulation Manager informed of issues.
- Be trained in emergency procedures and act as essential personnel during campus closures or emergencies, overseeing sheltering in place when needed.
- Support special projects assigned to checkout staff and provide backup staffing when required.
- Assist in maintaining the physical space, including shelving, resetting furniture, and placing signage.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- High school diploma.
- Ability to interpret and follow written and oral instructions.
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills to prioritize tasks and adapt policies as needed.
- Ability to handle high-pressure and emergency situations effectively.
- Demonstrated adaptability and capacity to cope with change.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Experience in giving and receiving instructions on various details.
- Experience supervising individuals with differing abilities.
Work Hours/Travel Requirements
Typically, work hours are 11:00 am – 5:00 pm on Saturdays and 11:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday - Thursday, totaling 26 hours per week. Hours may vary during summers and holidays.
