Erwin Penland Introduces Alaska to Verizon

Erwin Penland teamed up with production company Harpoon Picures for a visually striking tribute to Alaska, celebrating the network’s arrival in the 49th state.

The well-shot 30-second spot highlights some of the state’s natural beauty before concluding with the Verizon team showing up and saying, “We’re here Alaska.” The ad celebrates the fact that Verizon’s expansion into the territory has made the company Alaska’s largest and fastest 4G LTE network. Harpoon was able to assemble a team and put the spot together over the course of just several days.

“A project like this reminds us that it takes more than a great director to produce a great spot,” said Chris Miller, Harpoon’s director of new business development.”Harpoon put all our best problem solving skills to the test and our amazing production team deftly pulled off every challenge presented to them in an incredibly short amount of time.” Read more

Draftfcb, Chief Digital Officer Part Ways

After spending nearly five years at IPG-owned Draftfcb, first as EVP/group management director, digital and the last year-plus as chief digital officer, Chris Miller is leaving the agency. Sources familiar with the matter tell us that Miller, who worked out of the Chicago office, has resigned for a post at pharmaceutical company, Abbott Laboratories. Prior to Draftfcb, Miller spent four years at the now-defunct Windy City operation Element79, where he last held the same role as CDO. Sources say Draftfcb does not plan to fill the chief digital officer role.

Kevin Drew Davis Leaves Draftfcb

Sources familiar with the matter confirm that Kevin Drew Davis has parted ways with Draftfcb Chicago. Davis joined Draft Chi in January 2010 as SVP/group creative director, digital and subsequently partnered with SVP/group management director, digital Chris Miller to work on a variety of accounts (Davis left as an EVP, FYI). Prior to Draft, Davis spent three years at Publicis (the first two in Dallas, third in Seattle), where he served as SVP, director of digital strategy/interactive CD. During his career, Davis worked at the likes of The Richards Group and he spent a healthy six years as global interactive CD at various offices within the W+K network.

There’s no official word on where Davis is headed yet, but all signs are pointing to Digitas at the moment.
