Gwen Stefani Stars in McCann XBC’s ‘Priceless Surprises’ for MasterCard

McCann XBC teamed up with Gwen Stefani in a new 30-second broadcast spot for MasterCard directed by Wondros’ Sophie Muller.

The spot focuses on MasterCard’s integration with Apple Pay and the “priceless surprises” the company is giving away to customers using the new feature. Stefani works a rocket launcher, sending these surprises — including a hand bag, concert tickets (to see Stefani, naturally) and a “golf experience” represented by a golf kart — flying through the air toward unsuspecting MasterCard users. At the end of the spot, an unsuspecting fan rocking Stefani’s old haircut wins a chance to meet the woman herself.

It’s pretty basic stuff, with McCann XBC and MasterCard counting on Stefani’s star power to win over viewers and the potential prizes to get them excited for MasterCard’s Apple Pay integration. The choice of Stefani isn’t simply a nostalgic one for the brand, as the singer’s recent single “Spark The Fire” is used as the spot’s soundtrack and she has both a solo album and an album with No Doubt in the works.

McCann XBC Appoints New President, Chairman

Devika

Today brings a couple of top-level shifts at McCann XBC (that’s EXTRABOLD CONDENSED) unit: a new president and a new chairman.

Joyce King Thomas will be chairman and Devika Bulchandani will succeed her, effective immediately.

You may recall that Thomas, who spent 16 years at McCann and served as its CCO until 2010, returned to the agency at the end of 2012 to run the new all-things-MasterCard unit after stepping down and leaving to spend two years working as a freelance consultant and experimenting with long-form journalism at (the excellent) Longreads.

Bulchandani’s promotion is leading the headlines: as President, she will work with all McCann Worldgroup/Interpublic shops in XBC (MRM//McCann, R/GA, Octagon) in order to “ensure that the global Priceless platform works in new and ever more relevant ways”, or promote MasterCard around the world.

She’s been with McCann for more than 17 years, most recently rising to the level of Chief Strategy Officer in 2005.

Both Bulchandani and Thomas will work with MasterCard CMO Raja Rajamannar, who writes:

“I am confident under [Bulchandani's] leadership and Joyce’s creative direction that the MasterCard and McCann XBC partnership will be even stronger and the work even more contemporary and culturally relevant.”

CP+B Alum Reilly Heads to McCann as Part of Global Creative Shift

robreilly1Barely a month after parting ways with Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Rob Reilly, who last served as partner/worldwide chief creative officer at said agency, has moved over to McCann Worldgroup, where he assumes the role of global creative chairman. Reilly, who spent a decade at CP+B, and now joins an agency that is promoting Linus Karlsson to creative chairman of its Chevy-focused unit, Commonwealth, and Andreas Dahlqvist haCCO of said unit as well as president of the McCann Creative Leadership Council. Karlsson and Dahlqvist had previously served as CCO and deputy CCO, global brands, respectively of McCann Erickson.

In a statement, McCann Worldgroup chairman/CEO Harris Diamond says, “With the addition of Rob and with Linus and Andreas’ new roles—teamed with Luca Lindner (President, McCann Worldgroup) and our other Worldgroup creative leadership that includes Prasoon Joshi, Washington Olivetto, Joyce King ThomasMonica Moro, Leandro Raposo and John Mescall, as well as the rest of our creative teams around the world—we continue to strengthen our focus on global client leadership and our commitment to delivering McCann’s highest standards of creative excellence.”

McCann Launches XBC, Welcomes King Thomas Back to the Fold

Perhaps absence really does make the heart grow fonder. After two-and-a-half years away from McCann, the place where she spent 16 years of her career and last served as CCO of the New York office, Joyce King Thomas has returned to the agency to take on a new role as president of McCann XBC (or “ExtraBoldCondensed”–sorta like a hair care product). The new, peculiarly titled unit will focus on McCann’s MasterCard biz and thus King Thomas should feel right at home considering she co-created the “Priceless” campaign for the brand some 15 years ago while at the agency.

McCann XBC (thank heavens there’s no “Team” moniker) will work in tandem with all other IPG agencies currently serving MasterCard in 112 markets including  R/GA, Octagon, UM and MRM. Along with King Thomas, the new division’s leadership includes Richard O’Leary, currently global account director for MasterCard, who will serve as managing director, and Devika Bulchandani, who will assume the title of global strategy director.

Newly installed McCann Worldgroup CEO/chairman Harris Diamond says of the returning King Thomas, who will take on her new role in January, “I am excited that Joyce will be leading McCann XBC. Her ideas, creativity and strategic understanding of the MasterCard brand are unparalleled.”

In between her two stints at McCann, King Thomas served as a creative consultant, traveled to India, worked on efforts including the Passion Project and most recently worked as a partner at long-form journo site, Longreads.

Karlsson Headed to McCann After All

Well, at least we sort of scooped AdAge on this yesterday. But after giving us a solid NO when we inquired, McCann indeed announced to staff at an internal meeting this afternoon that Linus Karlsson is joining the agency and will lead creative in both New York and London, effective February 2011. My, how quickly things change. Karlsson as we know suddenly left Mother and now we know that the CCO/chairman was probably too big to pass up. With McCann and Euro RSCG taken care of, who’s next to fill their vacant top creative post?

Who’s Hitting Up the Contagious/Moth Event Tonight?

The Advertising Week festivities are slowly drawing to a close and while we’ve hit up our fair share of panels that were fun and interesting, we’re particularly looking forward to this event tonight that’s being thrown by Contagious, Organic and non-profit group The Moth. We figured we’d give our buddy Nick Parish over at Contagious some free publicity for this affair, which is being billed as a StorySLAM and will feature the likes of Gerry Graf, Joyce King Thomas and Eric Silver. We’ll be there so come say hi. Get more info here.
