New Era Brings Celeb Trash-Talk to Chicago’s Crosstown Rivalry

Last year, New Era delighted with a round of spots that featured Boston Red Sox fan John Krasinski and New York Yankees fan Alec Baldwin trading jabs in support of their respective teams. Donning New Era’s on-field hats, the campaign (created by agency Brooklyn Brothers) ran over the course of the 2011 MLB regular season, culminating in Baldwin’s “character” accidentally committing an act of arson after taunting Krasinski by burning a stack of Sox tickets.

This time around, New Era is focusing on a different baseball rivalry, casting two more members of the NBC Thursday night comedy lineup in starring roles. Written and produced by the team at Funny or Die, “Chicago vs. Chicago: Round 1″ finds Cubs supporter Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson of Parks and Recreation) trash-talking with Southside native and White Sox fan, Craig Robinson (Darryl Philbin of The Office). Debuting today, the 60-second cut focuses on, among other things, Wrigley Field’s famous foliage, former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich‘s attempt to sell off President Obama’s vacant senate seat, and whether or not “havetalent” is one word.

And, for the record, you CAN get good pizza north of Division St. No; Gino’s East doesn’t count. Read an interview with Offerman and Robinson discussing the spot and their history with Chicago baseball here.

Fmr. Illinois Governor/Convicted Felon Stars in Spirit Airline Ad

Discount airline Spirit is no stranger to controversial, distasteful ads. Since 2006, Spirit’s marketing has touched on such generally taboo subjects as disgraced politicians, venereal disease and MILFs. Hey, an airline promising $14 for a flight halfway across the country must be joking, right?

One of Spirit Airlines’ most famous past targets was former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. Best known for attempting to sell President Obama‘s vacant U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder and for a hair duel with Donald Trump on Celebrity Apprentice, Blagojevich and the massive media blitz behind him are now coming to an end. In June, Blago was found guilty on 17 of 20 corruption charges, and earlier this week, we found out his crimes are resulting in a 14-year prison sentence, of which he is expected to serve 11 years and nine months. Accordingly, Spirit is celebrating the 14-year sentence with a $14 airfare and the above ad which throws Blago’s famous hairdo on top of honest Abe’s. Whoever art directed that must have had an absolutely wonderful time doing so.

Not only did the people of Illinois feel comfort that justice had finally been served in their state, but they felt elated at the prospect of being able to fly from O’Hare to LaGuardia for as low as $14 one way. With the Bears in such rough shape that rumors of the ol’ gunslinger’s interest in the Windy City abounded, Chicagoans needed a reason to celebrate this holiday season. I’ll see you in February, NYC.

Illinois Lottery Asks That We ‘Joy Someone’

Did you know that it’s only nine days until the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Yes, it’s almost that magical time of year when you’re family gorges itself on poultry and you gather ’round the TV to see the Detroit Lions embarrass themselves in front of the nation. Of course, Thanksgiving also marks the beginning of the holiday season, and what’s more Santa-approved than participating in your local lottery?

There are very few stocking stuffers more convenient than lottery scratch-offs. Not only can they fit into any regulation-size stocking, but there is that slim possibility that your $2 investment could be worth much more for the recipient. And, this spot from Energy BBDO names all sorts of people for whom a lottery ticket would be an appropriate gift. Sure, you might not give your kid or your sibling Christmas-themed scratch-off sheet and a quarter to ease the process. But, what of that supporting cast in your life for whom you need some sort of cheap present?

Sure, 2010 probably won’t be what Illini remember as the year when “joy” became a verb. But, it will be known as the year Rod Blagojevich got away with selling a gubernatorial seat, the year Mayor Daley announced his retirement and the year when Rahm Emanuel became a worthy contender for Chicago’s throne. Illinois is a state of high rollers, and while it might not win it big any time in the foreseeable future, they play for the chance of a big payoff. Will it be worth it? Well, just look at the Chicago Blackhawks.
