Female Friendly Hackathon In NYC Today And Tomorrow

Four women from all parts of the startup community have joined together to create an event like no other. The first female friendly hackathon, called Hack’n Jill.

And it’s happening today and tomorrow in New York City.

How did Hackn’ Jill come to be?

Judy He (developer), Eugenia Koo (business), Kara Silverman (communications) and Lauren Gilchrist (product) were brought together by mutual friend, Aaron Smyth. It seems Aaron shared an observation with each of them: that there were never any women at the hackathons he attended.

Wanting to fix this, he asked if these friends would be interested in organizing a hackday for women that would both prove women are amazing technologists and also be an environment encouraging and open to them. And Hackn’ Jill was born.

Ultimately they want to change the conversation about women in tech, “We believe that women are committed and passionate technologists and that diverse teams make better products.” And they’re striving to “create an environment where both genders feel welcome to build cool things together.”

Registrations have exceeded their expectations and are still coming in (even though they are all waitlisted) on the day of the event. Looks like they’re on to something. There are 50 men and 50 women participating. They’re developers, designers and digital dreamers from around New York and projects will cover everything from food and fitness to fun in the sun.

You can follow their progress on Twitter via the #HackYourSummer hashtag.

Hackn’ Jill is all about breaking down the boundaries between men and women in the tech and internet industries. We have been blown away by the response from both genders and are excited to see what happens when they collaborate to create amazing #hackyoursummer products,” said Kara Silverman.

So what do you think of this? And if you’re an attendee, please feel free to share what the event was like in the comments!

And if you’re in the NYC area, swing by Appnexus (28 W. 23rd Street, 5th Floor) and check out the hackathon demos on Saturday June 16th at 6pm.
