Twitter 2011: One Billion Tweets Every 5 Days (And Other Record-Breaking Events) [INFOGRAPHIC]

2011 was a huge year for Twitter, with the social platform breaking records left, right and centre.

The Japanese celebration of the New Year started the ball rolling, and in May, Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards set a new tweets per second (TPS) record on Twitter. Despite a host of major events, including earthquakes in Japan and the USA, the death of Steve Jobs and the raid on Osama Bin Laden, this record stood until December, when it was beaten by, of all things, the television airing of a 25-year old Japanese movie.

It had more than a little of everything: the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, political scandal and revolution, the deaths of several major celebrities and tech giants, the farce that was President Obama’s birth certificate, a Royal Wedding, the raid on Osama Bin Laden (and Colonel Gaddafi), the ‘Rapture’, the final space shuttle mission, Google+, the London riots, Facebook Timeline, a new iPhone, a world population of 7 billion and, uh, Rebecca Black.

Twitter’s #YearInReview: Which World Events Triggered The Most Tweets In 2011? [INFOGRAPHIC]

In the final part of their 2011 #YearInReview, Twitter has charted the top Tweets Per Second (TPS) moments of 2011.

The biggest spike on Twitter this year came during Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards back in August, when the all-time record of 8,868 TPS was established. Other peaks this year included the resignation (and later, death) of Steve Jobs, the execution of Troy Davis, New Year’s Day and raid on Osama Bin Laden.
