Languages Of New York, According To Twitter [MAP]

Data analysts James Cheshire, Ed Manley, and John Barratt have created a very cool map depicting the most commonly used languages in New York, based on the ones used on Twitter.

The team visualized the geography of about 8.5 million geo-located tweets collected between January 2010 and February 2013, with language detected using Google’s translation tools.

Twitter Adds Danish, Finnish, Norwegian And Polish, Now Supports 21 Different Languages

Twitter was an all-English network until April 2008, when the platform added support for Japanese.

Spanish and French translations became available in November 2009. In July of this year, Brazilian Portuguese became the latest addition, shortly followed by Dutch, Indonesian, Filipino and Malay.

Now, with Danish, Finnish, Norwegian And Polish newly available on the network, Twitter supports an impressive 21 different languages.

39% Of All Tweets Are In English, But Arabic Now Fastest-Growing Language On Twitter [STUDY]

Last month, more than 2 million tweets were posted every day on Twitter in Arabic, up from about 30,000 per day in July 2010, says a new study.

Semiocast analyzed 5.6 billion public tweets and discovered that while English was far and away the most popular language used on Twitter, making up some 39 percent of all tweets, or 70 million per day, Arabic was the fastest-growing language overall, rising over two thousand percent in the past year, and is now the eighth most-used language on the network.

Twitter Adds Support For Brazilian Portuguese, Tweets Now Available In 10 Languages

In a new post on the official blog, Twitter has announced new support for Brazilian Portuguese. The network is enormously popular in Brazil and this is a very smart (if slightly overdue) move from Twitter.

The translation took place in three days, which Twitter states is their fastest yet, and brings Twitter’s language support tally, which also includes Turkish, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Korean, French, German, Japanese, and of course English, up to 10.

As the platform expands its reach around the world, Twitter is responding with a big global push, opening offices in London, appointing a country manager in Japan, and now, reports the official blog, adding new language options.

Joining Italian, Spanish, Korean, French, German, Japanese, and of course English, Twitter is now available in Turkish and Russian.
