Did you know that almost three-quarters (71 percent) of internet users are more likely to purchase from a brand that they are following on a social networking site such as Twitter or Facebook? Indeed, social media now accounts for almost one-quarter (22.5 percent) of all time that U.S. citizens spend online, and this weight of activity transcends down to all levels – an incredible 91 percent of searchers say that they use Facebook to find local businesses online.
Last week the world was rocked by a tweet issued by the official Associated Press (@AP) Twitter profile that reported that President Barack Obama had been injured after two explosions in the White House. Except (and of course), the news was fake. There were no explosions at the White House, and President Obama had not been injured. The problem? The source, the @AP Twitter account, was real, and had been compromised by hackers, and Twitter has now warned journalists and media companies that they expect these attacks to continue.
Did you know that 81 percent of shoppers say that posts from their friends on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook directly impacted their purchasing decisions? Moreover, 30 percent of social media shoppers respond better to brand offers when they have been reposted by a friend, and almost two-in-five moms (38 percent) are more likely to purchase from brands they “Like” on Facebook than other women.
If your hotel offered you a 25% discount on your stay, would you take it if it meant you had to stop logging onto any social networks while on the vacation? If you’re like 57% of respondents to a SpringHill Suites by Marriott survey, the answer would be no.
Have you noticed your tweets are being “favorited” more often on Twitter lately? Or are you one of the folks responsible for this favoriting uptick? If you haven’t noticed it yet, you will. Favoriting tweets is quickly becoming a “thing” on Twitter – and some folks swear it’s more effective than ads when it comes to growing your Twitter following.
Back in the days of yore, navigating around your personal computer often depended as much on your knowledge of keyboard shortcuts as it did your dexterity with a mouse. For example, word processors and other document-editing software have used shortcuts such as CTRL+B (for bold) and CTRL+I (for italics) pretty much since the beginning of (their) time. And when the internet kicked off, many websites looked to incorporate these keyboard commands into their own online tools. Some added a bunch of new ones of their own, and one of the sites that loves the keyboard shortcut is Twitter.
Twitter – it’s everywhere, isn’t it? Well, maybe not, according to one study. Despite being widely known throughout France, with 89 percent of internet users aged 15 or over in the country aware of the micro-blogging social network, just 11 percent have, or once had, a Twitter profile. Moreover, the survey, conducted by Ipsos and CGI back in March, revealed that only one in twenty (5 percent) of these users were actively engaged on Twitter, and most of these were simply reading (as opposed to posting) tweets.
So you’ve accumulated a ton of Twitter followers for your brand – now what? You need some actionable intel on them to make “social” work the way it’s meant to: With an eerie targeting ability that helps you sell your products and services to people based on who they are and what they like. Sound too creepy-good to be true? It isn’t.
Nothing posted online is private, of course – and any expectation of privacy on social media is pure comedy, but some sites (like Twitter) go the extra mile in an attempt to appease the masses. And guess what? When stacked against other sites by theElectronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Twitter earns top marks for protecting user privacy! Guess who doesn’t?
Twitter has rolled out a redesign of its official blog, which is quite a departure from the previous look, with the new design perhaps more befitting of the social micro-blogging network. Or maybe it looks more like the default writing theme that comes with (or is easily downloadable for) many blogging platforms? You be the judge.
