Background: In the beginning of men's magazines, before Maxim and FHM, before scantily clad starlets and beer-jock humor ruled the newsstands, there was Men's Health. Launched in 1988 as a one-shot spinoff of Prevention, the mag assumed an informative but informal tone that made a connection with a readership that both individually define and want to better understand manhood. Its success changed the landscape of men's mags, proving that the fellas would in fact read a service publication.
More than 25 years later, MH has expanded into a power brand out of competitive and progressive necessity, including a radio show attracting a million weekly listeners, a flourishing website and an enviable online community. Still, anchoring the multiplatform collateral is the print magazine -- 41 editions in 65 countries -- attracting readers ranging from ages 20 to 60, though the average devotee is 27. That broad range is threaded by commonalities: the prototypical MH man is affluent, educated and looking for tips to help him organize his life and keep him spry, sexy and in shape.
