How to Pitch: Shape
'We absolutely are open to new writers'- August 8, 2013
Circulation: 1.63 million
Frequency: 10 times per year
Special issues: The summer issue (July/August) is dedicated to the bikini body and September is all about fashion.
Background: While its title -- along with the stream of uber-fit models and celebs gracing each cover-- conjures images of marathon gym sessions, Shape magazine is about much more than lunges and protein shakes. "We are trying to give readers practical ways to work health, fitness and nutrition into their lives," said deputy editor Jeanine Detz. "And we also address other aspects of their lives, to be a whole lifestyle magazine."
Beauty and fashion receive ample coverage within Shape's pages, but health and fitness is the publication's claim to fame. Readers can trust that editors will turn out quality content that will help them "live their healthiest, happiest lives."
According to Detz, Shape is geared toward active women between the ages of 18 and 40 who want to live a healthy lifestyle. But that is where the targeting stops. "I would say that we're very inclusive," said Detz. "We bring readers doable, yet effective workouts and programs that will help them reach their goals. We're not just reaching for the person who's super fit or the person who's not-so-fit; we really offer information for everyone on the spectrum."
