A Reliable Source on Grandma

The Post’s Names & Faces column today actually mentions that OTHER daily newspaper in town–no, not the Examiner, the OTHER OTHER paper. Evidently, Washington Times “Inside the Beltway” columnist John McCaslin is featured in the latest edition of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. Or, more accurately, his mother is featured in the new version of “Chicken Soup for the Grandmother’s Soul.”

McCaslin told the Post “a Chicken Soup employee contacted him five years ago and asked for a copy of his story [and] McCaslin says he forgot all about it until he received a letter informing him he would finally be published in the book.”

McCaslin’s column, “Grandma Wanda” tells the story of his mother, who, the Post explains, “insisted on wrapping a Christmas present for his daughter before she died at midnight on Christmas Eve. The writer says that despite not being a granny, he thinks his story ‘speaks for all grandmothers and the important role they play.’”

> Anyone else find it odd that the Post’s readers are the last to find out the paper’s new Reliable Source columnists? We broke the story early Wednesday afternoon, Washingtonian’s Harry Jaffe wrote it up later that day, and Romenesko’s media news site picked up Jaffe’s story. Two dead tree editions of the newspaper later, still no announcement in the Post….
