The British Embassy Commemorates Burning of the White House

The British Embassy Sunday night ruffled some feathers when it posted a tweet to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the White House going up in flames, with a White House cake surrounded by American and British flags and sparklers, and the caption, “Only sparklers this time!”

According to History.com, “during the War of 1812…British troops enter Washington, D.C. and burn the White House in retaliation for the American attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, in June 1812.”

The embassy later tweeted apologies with a link to a HuffPost piece penned by Patrick Davies, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Washington, commemorating the anniversary.

Hillary Clinton Asks Frank Underwood for Bill Clinton Birthday Wishes

Again, Hillary Clinton misses the mark of actually being funny in a recent video posted to the Clinton Foundation’s YouTube channel of a “prank call” the former Secretary of State receives from “House of Cards’ ” Frank Underwood. In it, Spacey imitates former President Bill Clinton, and in closing, the former First Lady encourages Underwood to sign Bill’s online and public 68th birthday card.

WATCH, and comment if you actually laughed.

The Top Ten Comedic Fails at the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 10.26.12Last night at the newly opened Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC, the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association hosted its annual Congressional correspondents’ dinner, where recipients of several awards were recognized for excellence in areas of television and radio reporting.

The evening’s comedic guest was Nick Offerman, who plays Ron Swanson on “Parks and Recreation.” White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough also offered remarks.

But as usual, out of town comedians in Washington and non-professional comedians don’t always come up with the funniest of lines. Below are the top ten comedic fails of the night from Offerman and McDonough’s time at the podium.

10 – Nick Offerman: “The eighth amendment protects us from cruel and unusual punishment. Which apparently does not include strapping a citizen to a table and murdering them. I guess that’s some sort of judgement call.”

9 – Nick Offerman: ”Some people assume that because I’m an actor, I’m a Democrat. And other people assume that because I like to hunt and build things, I’m a Republican. I am neither. I’m a proud bull moose.” Read more

National Press Club’s Pub Quiz is a Snooze

20140313_200558

Each month, the National Press Club holds a Pub Quiz - an evening of trivia, food, drink, and prizes – in the Reliable Source’s Truman Lounge for members and guests. What’s not to like, right? Right…FishbowlDC went last night, and here’s how it went down.

6:59pm - Abruptly end call with friend from home so as not to be late to the National Press Club’s Pub Quiz.

7:00 - Immediately regret ending said call.

My first thought is that I’ve come to the wrong gathering. This has to be either a nursing home bingo night or a sober mixer. Nope, it’s Pub Quiz.

7:03 - Introduce myself to the NPC’s Membership Secretary and confirm it’s cool for me to cover. It is, and I immediately stake my claim at a corner seat at the bar overlooking an eager crowd of 40 or so guests.

7:06 - Return to my seat (phone charger strategically placed to save my spot) after stepping away for a minute to two gentleman making my space theirs. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Introduce myself, let them know I was in fact sitting there, and am told they need this spot for their large group that’s soon to arrive. Still…Not. Gonna. Happen.

(Not So) Happy Hour

A look at the URL for this video suggests that whoever put it up had a different story in mind when she started than the one she ended up running. Either that, or events on the ground escalated really quickly…
