Examiner Challenges Sun

The Sun’s Nick Madigan seems to be spending a lot of his time these days writing about the challenges facing his own paper–never an easy position to be in. Today he writes up the announced arrival of Philip F. Anschutz‘s Examiner paper to the Baltimore region.

Much like it’s Washington sister, the new Baltimore Examiner will distribute 250,000 copies six days a week, putting it on par with the Sun’s reported circulation of around 246,000. Of course there’s a big difference between the people who actually pay money and want to get the Sun and getting the Examiner dropped free on your doorstep.

The only conceivable upside for the Sun to the new competition is perhaps it’ll lead the parent company, Tribune, to invest money in the paper if there’s a real life local newspaper war.
