Memo from Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams after the jump.

Jack Limpert has decided to step down as Editor of The Washingtonian after editing the magazine for more than 40 years. As everyone here knows, Jack is the DNA of the magazine so he won’t be going far–just down the hall where he will remain here as editor-at-large. Jack has overseen the growth and success of this magazine. My family, along with many others who have sat in your chairs before you, are deeply grateful to have had him at the helm for so long.

My father used to tell me that Jack was the “secret ingredient” to the success of the magazine because, he said, “You can’t sell anything without first-rate edit.” He also told both Jack and me to keep our eyes open for someone who might follow in such big shoes. Back in the spring, Jack, my mother Ellie, and I all agreed that Garrett Graff would be an excellent leader and steward of the magazine, and at that point we named him to Executive Editor. Since that time, Jack and Garrett have been working closely together.

I am now pleased to announce that Garrett will become the Editor of The Washingtonian magazine on September 1, 2009. He will be the third editor in the 44 year history of the magazine. I canÂ’t thank Jack enough for his years of dedicated, inspired leadership. Please wish them both good luck and success in their new roles!
